It can also apparently take selfies.<\/p>\n<p>Since we\u2019re all eventually going to live in the metaverse, let\u2019s scan our rooms so the transition won\u2019t be too shocking. MeetKai turns smartphone video into <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/meetkai-launches-new-room-scanning-tech-and-metaverse-builder\/\">detailed 3D environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2465780\">\n<p><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2465780\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/meetkai.gif\" alt width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2465780\">MeetKai\u2019s room-rendering tech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Amazon is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/amazon-sidewalk-adds-new-partners-plans-to-open-to-developers-soon\/\">stepping up its Sidewalk network<\/a> with a bunch of low-bandwidth IoT things and partners. We\u2019re all clearly still figuring out this whole \u201csmart home\u201d thing.<\/p>\n<p>Labrador Systems has <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/labrador-taps-the-echo-show-to-expand-functionality-for-its-eldercare-robot\/\">upgraded its elder-care robot with an Echo Show,<\/a> using it as a sort of frontend for the bot. It\u2019s an \u201cearly proof of concept,\u201d which is good because I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s the way to go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/alexa-find-an-ev-charging-station\/\">Alexa can now tell you<\/a> where the nearest public charging spot for your electric vehicle is. It\u2019s sad this is necessary but if that\u2019s the extent of your hardship, maybe that\u2019s something to be happy about.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2464696\">\n<p><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2464696\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ring Peephole Cam\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"  ><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2464696\">Knock knock, who\u2019s there? Why get up from the couch?<\/p>\n<p>Plex is finally \u2014 two years after announcing it at CES 2020 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/streamer-plex-finally-ready-to-launch-a-tv-and-movie-rentals-marketplace\/\">launching its rentals marketplace<\/a>. \u201cIt was a lot harder than we thought,\u201d said co-founder Scott Olechowski. Now fix the PS5 app, Scott! It\u2019s a disaster! (Is there a problem level a level of triviality above first-world? I have lots.)<\/p>\n<p>Ossia and its Cota wireless power were on stage at Disrupt 2023\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/09\/09\/cota-by-ossia-wireless-power\/\">sorry, 2013<\/a>. But they\u2019re still putting it out there and now have <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/ossia-is-taking-its-wireless-power-tech-to-consumers-with-anew-charging-base\/\">a security camera that runs on wireless power<\/a> instead of batteries. Sure, you could use a regular lock of literally any kind, but that\u2019s not very CES.<\/p>\n<p>I chatted with the guys from StudioBox at Disrupt, and was planning on writing up the pro-remote-video-studio-in-a-box, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/studiobox-at-ces\/\">but Haje ate my lunch<\/a>. Read up on how they\u2019re adjusting their business to the post-pandemic world:<\/p>\n<p>Smart speakers are nice until you have 2 or 3 of them, then you have no idea where your music will go when you hit play. Google <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/google-is-working-on-cross-device-notifications-to-let-you-resume-media-playback-on-the-move\/\">has a solution, kind of<\/a>. More like a way to manage the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Google also provided some more information on its <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/new-android-auto-features-give-car-display-a-user-design-makeover\/\">Android Auto UI refresh<\/a>, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/05\/google-hd-maps-volvo-polestar\/\">HD upgrade for its car maps<\/a> that will have more precise lane markings, objects, and other stuff included. If you\u2019re running out of battery so much you need this thing\u2026 you\u2019re probably super successful. You\u2019ll be able to order one starting in 2025, supposedly.<\/p>\n<p>BMW isn\u2019t even pretending its <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/04\/bmw-unveils-dee-prototype-the-next-level-of-human-machine-interaction\/\">i Vision Dee<\/a> is real. They hired Schwarzenegger to do the intro video, and the exterior can be customized with different colors of E-Ink (all ugly).
