Most people just thank their stylist and leave the scene of the crime, but Rietveld suggests sticking it out in the chair while they make it right. A barber is not a mind-reader; you have to be honest and tell them that this is not what you had in mind while being very specific about what you do and don’t like about the cut.

Don’t feel bad about telling your stylist you’re unhappy with your cut. Most professional barbers won’t take it personally, and why would they? They’re not the ones who are going to be wearing it for the next few weeks. A good barber will speak up and offer suggestions to make sure you get what you want.

“Research beforehand to ensure your barber has done similar haircuts as the one you want, and make sure that before they bring out the clippers that you are both in agreement with what is going on,” says Rietveld. “If it seems as though there is no option for fixing the hair, go to a different barber, or grow out your hair a bit until it is long enough to style again.”

How to Ask for the Haircut You Actually Want

Jacob Ammentorp Lund

Cultivating that relationship with your barber or hairstylist is key in preventing a bad haircut. Once you find someone you can trust, continue seeing them for regular trims to build that bridge of open communication.

“In this field, it is our job to make the client feel important and that their time in the chair is all about them,” says Rietveld. “It is important to go into an appointment knowing what style you want, and reference pictures are great, but a great barber will make sure the client leaves happy.”

While your barber is the one holding the scissors, you do have some control over whether or not you end up with a cut you love. Learning to speak their language can help avoid any miscommunication that may lead to a bad haircut.

Below, we’ve laid out a few of the most popular hairstyles guys are asking for and asked Rietveld to spell out the best way to ask for each particular style. Don’t forget to also come prepared with a few photos of what you’re looking for to help give your stylist a visual reference and help them understand your preferences.

Here are some tips for communicating your desired haircut to your stylist, according to master barber Robert Rietveld:

If you want a French crop:

Ask for a short back and short sides, with longer, textured hair on the top. If you have a longer face, ask your barber to accentuate the fringe a bit more. Some like a drastic look and cut even shorter around the ears and sides of the head.

If you want a longer mullet:

Ask for a medium length across the crown and top, with a more subtle fade at the sides for a seamless transition into the longer hair from the crown going down toward the nape of the neck.

If you want a shorter mullet:

Like the longer mullet, this style will still have longer hair on top and a slightly elongated tail, with a more drastic fade on the sides.

If you want texture on top with a fade:

Ask to keep the top long with a low taper fade on the bottom. There are different levels of the fade haircut, using different clipper guard sizes to obtain the length that you want. A fade with texture on top looks best using a number 2 or 3, gradually increasing the clipper number the closer to the top of the head you get. Never ask your barber for “just a trim,” as the clipper numbers differ greatly and your needs can be miscommunicated.

Santiago Iñiguez / EyeEm

If you want a brushback:

This look often needs to be accompanied with a gel or pomade to achieve the sleek look many think of when hearing the term “brush back.” For this style, you will need a bit of length to achieve the tapered look. In most cases, clippers of varying numbers will be used from the nape of the neck to under the crown to achieve a gradual blend from shorter to longer, and the hair on top of the head will be trimmed to make sure it doesn’t look too choppy.

If you want a burst fade:

A burst fade is similar to a traditional fade but your barber will trim a curved section from under the ears to the nape of the neck, while blending/tapering that section into the longer hair surrounding it.

If you want a subtle fade:

Rather than an extreme difference in length between the hair on the top of the head and the hair surrounding the ears and neck, a subtle fade will be done using clippers that leave much more length. Blending is extremely important to make sure you leave the chair with a fade, rather than a trim. A 4, 5, or 6 clipper is more likely to be used with this cut rather than something harsher like a 2 or 3.

If you’re trying to grow your hair out:

Make sure you go to a barber that has experience with longer styles. If you tell your barber you plan on growing your hair out they can help choose the right look for you that will continue to look good while your hair grows. The top of the hair grows slowest, so having your barber pay extra attention to the sides and back of the head can help to skip out on any awkward phases along the way. Also make sure that as your hair grows, you switch to a more lightweight hair product/pomade as it will weigh down your hair less and look less greasy.

If you want a lived-in haircut that doesn’t look too clean:

Ask for a shag haircut as they are coming back in style and look great. Because a shag has so many layers it helps to add volume and a messy vibe to an otherwise plain haircut, and shags are meant to look messy which means you won’t have to do much upkeep. A shorter shag is better for those with thicker hair, while a longer shag is great for people with thin hair.

Cristina Montemayor

Cristina Montemayor is a freelance writer and journalist living in Austin, Texas, covering beauty, grooming, style, and culture.
