Panos Panay is the man in charge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft hardware, and he has CEO Satya Nadella\u2019s ear<\/a>. So when he says that AI is the future of Windows, we\u2019re definitely paying attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is going to reinvent how you do everything on Windows, quite literally,\u201d he told an audience at AMD\u2019s CES 2023 press conference, pausing for effect. <\/p>\n

The context: AMD has just announced its new Ryzen 7000 mobile processors<\/a>, and the company\u2019s boasting that they\u2019re the first x86 chips to contain a dedicated AI engine \u2014 one that, it claims, also happens to be 20 percent faster than the one in Apple\u2019s MacBook Pros with M1 Pro chips. <\/p>\n

(Dragging Apple was a bit of a theme during the early part of AMD\u2019s keynote, though it\u2019s worth noting that Apple is overdue to refresh those laptops with M2 Pro chips<\/a>, and its existing MacBooks have largely unbeatable battery life<\/a>. AMD CEO Lisa Su claimed AMD\u2019s new chips can offer 30 hours of battery life, though a slide behind her clarified that they can reach 30 hours of video playback<\/em> specifically.)<\/p>\n

But back to AI: \u201cYou\u2019ve told me: every TOP I\u2019m going to put on that machine, I\u2019m going to use,\u201d Su related. \u201cI\u2019m going to try!\u201d Panos laughed during the presentation.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, he didn\u2019t go into much detail about how Windows might use them \u2014 for today, his one suggestion was that a PC\u2019s webcam could add background blur, detect eye contact, and automatically frame someone on a conference call while using far less battery, all part of Windows Studio Effects. He namedropped natural language models as well.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not all that compelling by itself, but it\u2019s intriguing to think that Microsoft might have bigger plans, especially because AMD\u2019s mobile chips won\u2019t be the only x86 ones with onboard AI engines for long. They\u2019ll also be included<\/a> in Intel\u2019s Meteor Lake chips, due later this year<\/a>, and they\u2019ve been a part of ARM-based chips for some time now. <\/p>\n

In fact, we\u2019ve seen Windows take advantage of the AI processing on an ARM chip for a different compelling Windows Studio Effect<\/a> \u2014 wiping out background noise on a call. Perhaps Windows laptops and tablets will be able to do the kinds of things that Microsoft has only been able to dream of with its ARM-based Surfaces<\/a> up till now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
