If you\u2019re planning on changing the battery on that old iPhone in your pocket, you better do it soon.<\/p>\n<p>The policy change was first discovered by a user on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/apple\/comments\/1014acd\/effective_march_1_2023_the_outofwarranty_battery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/apple\/comments\/1014acd\/effective_march_1_2023_the_outofwarranty_battery\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Apple subreddit<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> who noticed that replacing the battery on an out-of-warranty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/iphone-13\"><u>iPhone 13<\/u><\/a> and older models will now cost $89. This prompted other users to check out Apple\u2019s other repair services, and sure enough, other devices will be getting a price hike of their own on the same day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Getting a new battery for a MacBook Air will now cost $159 \u2013 a $30 bump. For both Macbook and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/best-macbook-pro\"><u>MacBook Pro laptops<\/u><\/a>, the replacement fee will jump an extra $50, making the new cost $249.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/apple.sjv.io\/c\/221109\/435031\/7613?subId1=trd-us-1082193186360596200&#038;sharedId=trd-us&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple.com%2Fipad%2Frepair\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/ipad\/repair\" data-hl-processed=\"hawklinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/apple.sjv.io\/c\/221109\/435031\/7613?subId1=hawk-custom-tracking&#038;sharedId=hawk-prefix&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple.com%2Fipad%2Frepair\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"apple.com\" data-merchant-id=\"30557\" data-merchant-url=\"apple.com\" data-merchant-network=\"ImpactRad\"><u>iPads<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>, the following models will also see a $20 fee hike, bringing the total price from $99 to $119: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/ipad-pro-129-2022\"><u>iPad Pro 12.9<\/u><\/a> (fifth generation and older), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/ipad-pro-11-2021-review\"><u>Pro 11<\/u><\/a> (third generation and older), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/ipad-pro-105\"><u>Pro 10.5<\/u><\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/pc-mac\/tablets\/ipad-pro-9-7-1317466\/review\"><u>Pro 9.7<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/ipad-mini-2021\"><u>iPad mini<\/u><\/a> (sixth generation and older), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/ipad-air-2022\"><u>iPad Air<\/u><\/a> (fifth generation and older). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prices will stay the same if your iPhone is a part of the AppleCare Plus program. If you\u2019re a part of the program and your phone\u2019s battery \u201cholds less than 80 percent of its original capacity\u201d, you can also replace said battery for free, according to the company.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"global-rollout\">Global rollout<\/h2>\n<p>The policy change will be global, although prices differ <a href=\"https:\/\/apple.sjv.io\/c\/221109\/435031\/7613?subId1=trd-us-7794331588586919000&#038;sharedId=trd-us&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple.com%2Fiphone%2Frepair%2Fbattery-replacement%2Flocaleselector\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/iphone\/repair\/battery-replacement\/localeselector\" data-hl-processed=\"hawklinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/apple.sjv.io\/c\/221109\/435031\/7613?subId1=hawk-custom-tracking&#038;sharedId=hawk-prefix&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.apple.com%2Fiphone%2Frepair%2Fbattery-replacement%2Flocaleselector\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"apple.com\" data-merchant-id=\"30557\" data-merchant-url=\"apple.com\" data-merchant-network=\"ImpactRad\"><u>depending on the region<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>. Canada, for example, will see the iPhone battery replacement fee go from $89 to $119 CAD (about $65 to $87 USD). Countries in the European Union will see a \u20ac24 \u00a0jump going from \u20ac75 to \u20ac99 (about $75 to $104 USD). Fee increases all around, with the United Kingdom seeing the biggest jump for all of the same models listed earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unknown what compelled Apple to suddenly increase prices without warning. Skim through that Reddit post mentioned earlier, and you\u2019ll see a ton of people responding very negatively. One user calls the hike a \u201crip off\u201d while another says it\u2019s \u201cridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The price hike could also be the start of a new company trend regarding device repairs. We reached out to Apple for reason behind the price hike and if the Self Service Repair program will see something similar. Since its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/you-can-now-repair-the-iphone-se-3-and-other-models-yourself\">launch back in April 2022<\/a>, Apple has mostly left the program alone. Self Service Repair has only seen only one new device added to its catalog: the iPhone SE 3.
