According to news website <!-- -->Korea JoongAng Daily, the court <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2022\/11\/25\/entertainment\/kpop\/chuu-loona-blockberry\/20221125181222439.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2022\/11\/25\/entertainment\/kpop\/chuu-loona-blockberry\/20221125181222439.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partially<\/a><\/span> approved her suit, ruling she could be granted a <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/loona-chuu-reportedly-files-lawsuit-blockberry-creative-suspend-contract\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/loona-chuu-reportedly-files-lawsuit-blockberry-creative-suspend-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preliminary injunction<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">But Chuu\u2019s victory may have also been the writing on the wall. On Nov.<!-- --> 25, Blockberry Creative announced that she was being <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/chuu-fired-from-loona-alleged-violent-language-misuse-power-agency-blockberry-creative-3355729\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/chuu-fired-from-loona-alleged-violent-language-misuse-power-agency-blockberry-creative-3355729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dropped from the group<\/a><\/span> for \u201cviolent language and misuse of power toward our staff,\u201d an abusive workplace behavior <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/explainer-what-is-south-koreas-gapjil-culture-of-workplace-harassment-10874851.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/explainer-what-is-south-koreas-gapjil-culture-of-workplace-harassment-10874851.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">known in Korea as <em>gapjil<\/em><\/a><\/span>, where higher ups abuse lower-level staff. The allegations against Chuu were met with <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/chuu-statement-loona-firing-blockberry-creative-3357232\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/chuu-statement-loona-firing-blockberry-creative-3357232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised eyebrows<\/a><\/span> amongst fans and industry professionals alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">On Nov. 29, days after Chuu\u2019s removal, <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/v.daum.net\/v\/20221128164803469\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/v.daum.net\/v\/20221128164803469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JTBC reported<\/a><\/span> (link in Korean) that nine of the remaining LOONA members had <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/9-members-loona-reportedly-file-injunction-suspend-contract-blockberry-creative\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/9-members-loona-reportedly-file-injunction-suspend-contract-blockberry-creative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed an injunction<\/a><\/span> against the label to suspend their exclusive contracts, citing a dissolution of trust between them and the company. Blockberry Creative <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1556170wpp\/9-loona-members-reportedly-file-injunctions-to-suspend-contracts-blockberrycreative-denies\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1556170wpp\/9-loona-members-reportedly-file-injunctions-to-suspend-contracts-blockberrycreative-denies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">denied the report<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Then the group\u2019s fandom, known as Orbits, stepped into the ring. They proclaimed a boycott of LOONA\u2019s upcoming album, <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/loona-new-music-11-member-chuu-group-blockberry-creative-3362165\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/loona-new-music-11-member-chuu-group-blockberry-creative-3362165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Original Album: 0<\/em><\/a><\/span>, originally set for release on Jan. 3. As prospective sales started to dive, Blockberry Creative declared the album release <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1559679wpp\/loonas-agency-announces-postponement-of-their-upcoming-comeback\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1559679wpp\/loonas-agency-announces-postponement-of-their-upcoming-comeback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indefinitely postponed<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 huxVoY\" id=\"h20633\"><strong>How the LOONA fan boycott works<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">On Dec. 5, LOONA Union, one of the group\u2019s largest online fanclubs, issued <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unionloona?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1600686696542404609%7Ctwgr%5Ef5cd4f9191b8c6e9aa2b112c7d3d3b074b5ef26d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rappler.com%2Fentertainment%2Fmusic%2Floona-fans-orbits-boycott-comeback-january-2023%2F\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unionloona?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1600686696542404609%7Ctwgr%5Ef5cd4f9191b8c6e9aa2b112c7d3d3b074b5ef26d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rappler.com%2Fentertainment%2Fmusic%2Floona-fans-orbits-boycott-comeback-january-2023%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an open letter<\/a><\/span> demanding Blockberry Creative give an explanation for the alleged mistreatment of LOONA members. It gave the company a <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/loona-fans-boycotting-upcoming-comeback-blockberry-creative-already-seeing-successful-results\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/loona-fans-boycotting-upcoming-comeback-blockberry-creative-already-seeing-successful-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dec. 7 deadline<\/a><\/span> to answer, threatening a boycott in the event of no response. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">The fandom\u2019s demands were threefold: that allegations against Chuu be retracted, an apology be made towards the group, and LOONA members be offered the option to terminate their contracts. The label kept mum, and a boycott of LOONA\u2019s new album pre-sales, coordinated mostly over Twitter and Tumblr, began on Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Fans were told to cease all purchase of Blockberry Creative merchandise, albums, and event tickets. According to Twitter account @loona_stats, preorders for the new album <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.allkpop.com\/article\/2022\/12\/pre-orders-for-loonas-new-album-drop-by-more-than-98-after-fans-boycott-against-blockberry-creative\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.allkpop.com\/article\/2022\/12\/pre-orders-for-loonas-new-album-drop-by-more-than-98-after-fans-boycott-against-blockberry-creative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dropped by 98%<\/a><\/span> compared with the previous album. An extensive list of Kpop stores around the globe also joined the boycott, committing to no longer stock LOONA products. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Instead of the usual number-pumping goals of Kpop fandoms, the new target for <em>The Original Album: 0<\/em> literally became zero. On Dec. 22, Blockberry Creative <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.allkpop.com\/article\/2022\/12\/blockberry-creative-indefinitely-postpones-loonas-comeback-provides-the-agencys-position-regarding-recent-events\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.allkpop.com\/article\/2022\/12\/blockberry-creative-indefinitely-postpones-loonas-comeback-provides-the-agencys-position-regarding-recent-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced its suspension<\/a><\/span> of the group\u2019s album release in January, saying the comeback would be \u201cmeaningless\u201d amid outstanding issues. The boycott is still ongoing. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 huxVoY\" id=\"h20634\"><strong>What\u2019s going on with LOONA\u2019s contracts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">The big sticking point for boycotting fans are LOONA\u2019s reportedly exploitative contracts, which may be shorting the group members on pay while strapping them with ever-mounting volumes of debt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">On Dec. 19, a bombshell expos\u00e9 published by Dispatch, a Korean celebrity gossip site, <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/n.news.naver.com\/entertain\/article\/433\/0000089071\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/n.news.naver.com\/entertain\/article\/433\/0000089071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revealed the terms<\/a><\/span> (link in Korean) of Chuu\u2019s exclusive contract that she signed in December 2017, when she was just 18 years old. The contract reportedly set an earnings ratio between the record label and Chuu at 7:3, where Blockberry Creative would scoop up 70% of the profits, while Chuu would be left with 30%. The contract also reportedly split expenses between the two parties at 5:5, where each side would be responsible for 50% of costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">According to Dispatch, the contract structure has <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1559206wpp\/dispatch-shares-further-details-on-conflict-between-chuu-and-loonas-agency-blockberrycreative\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1559206wpp\/dispatch-shares-further-details-on-conflict-between-chuu-and-loonas-agency-blockberrycreative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saddled each LOONA member<\/a><\/span> with approximately 200 million won ($153,500) of debt, calculated from the group\u2019s cumulative earnings since 2016\u201418.6 billion won ($14.3 <!-- -->million)\u2014and cumulative expenses over that same period\u201416.9 billion won (nearly $13 <!-- -->million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Orbits have said the contracts are trapping LOONA members in a cycle of \u201c<span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ianthou\/status\/1605148251253985280\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ianthou\/status\/1605148251253985280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perpetual debt<\/a><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 huxVoY\" id=\"h20635\"><strong>South Korea\u2019s Kpop industry has a history of exploitative contracts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">The controversy has put a spotlight on the industry greed behind Kpop\u2019s glitz and glamor. In the cutthroat business, where many aspiring stars begin training as children, exploitation is a familiar theme. So-called slave contracts, as they are known within the Kpop industry, have locked many a trainee into long-term, extractive agreements with record labels, leading to some cases where they <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/lists\/kpop-idols-never-got-properly-paid-former-companies\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/lists\/kpop-idols-never-got-properly-paid-former-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">never see a single paycheck<\/a><\/span> despite years of work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Notably, in 2008, former boy group TVXQ took their management company SM Entertainment (SME) to court over <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/culture\/2014\/12\/135_169279.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/culture\/2014\/12\/135_169279.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13-year-long contracts<\/a><\/span> their parents had signed on their behalf when they were children, and in 2014, three members of group EXO <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/07\/30\/k-pops-big-china-problem\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/07\/30\/k-pops-big-china-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ended up exiting<\/a><\/span> the same company, <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/culture\/2014\/12\/135_169279.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/culture\/2014\/12\/135_169279.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">citing exploitative treatment<\/a><\/span> and unfair profit distribution. All three sued SME over their contracts\u2014one <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1142629wpp\/tao-loses-final-appeal-lawsuit-sm-entertainment\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.soompi.com\/article\/1142629wpp\/tao-loses-final-appeal-lawsuit-sm-entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost his case<\/a><\/span>, and two <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.asianjunkie.com\/2016\/07\/21\/kris-luhan-sm-entertainment-settle-their-lawsuit-both-get-some-of-what-they-wanted\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.asianjunkie.com\/2016\/07\/21\/kris-luhan-sm-entertainment-settle-their-lawsuit-both-get-some-of-what-they-wanted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">settled<\/a><\/span>. In 2020, the four members of indie rock band The Rose terminated their contracts with J&#038;Star Company, claiming they <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/rose-files-contract-termination-due-lack-payments-excessive-schedules\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaboo.com\/news\/rose-files-contract-termination-due-lack-payments-excessive-schedules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had not been paid<\/a><\/span> since their debut in 2017.
