How about pitching in your resources to help make AI art, instead? A new community effort, Stable Horde, allows you to donate your PC\u2019s extra GPU cycles to create AI art <em>and<\/em> use your donated time to create AI art in just a fraction of the time instead.<\/p>\n<p>Stable Horde is a grass-roots effort where you can donate your PC\u2019s idle time to help others create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/788422\/how-to-get-started-with-ai-art-dall-e-mini-ai-dungeon-and-more.html\">fabulous AI art<\/a> \u2014 or you can use the \u201chorde\u201d of PCs to create your own AI art, too. Stable Horde is similar to both  (which went into \u201chibernation\u201d in 2020) or . Both of the latter services use your PC\u2019s processor power to solve distributed problems, such as protein analysis. Stable Horde uses your GPU, but for art.<\/p>\n<p>Stable Horde is essentially a distributed version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/916785\/creating-ai-art-local-pc-stable-diffusion.html\">Stable Diffusion<\/a>, which uses your own PC\u2019s GPU to create AI-generated art. If you want to join the Horde, you have two choices. As a consumer of AI art, you can use the distributed GPUs to create your own. You can also join your PC to the Horde itself. If you do \u2014 even if your GPU isn\u2019t particularly powerful \u2014 you\u2019ll be able to use the \u201ckudos\u201d you accumulate to prioritize your requests. Joining Stable Horde is essentially a nerdy project that you can do to help out the community.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"using-stable-horde-as-a-client-to-create-ai-art\">Using Stable Horde as a client to create AI art<\/h2>\n<p> has a few front-end interfaces to use to create AI art, but my preferred choice is , which taps into the Horde. (There\u2019s also a , with either a Web version or downloadable software.)  <\/p>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Artbot-1.png?w=1200\" alt=\"Stable Horde Artbot image generation\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption>The ArtBot interface to the Stable Horde gives you an  constantly-updated view at how your images are progressing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark Hachman \/ IDG<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>About the only additional thing you should really do is  for Stable Horde, which provides an API key. Registering provides a username, but the API key is what will identify you to the Horde. You\u2019ll need to enter the API key into the client. You can use the service anonymously but you\u2019ll be placed into the bottom of the queue. That\u2019s not recommended, as new requests will bump you even further down the line.<\/p>\n<p>Using Stable Horde\u2019s client interface is much the same as using any AI art generator, although the Horde has many AI models to choose from, each with their own particular style of art. There\u2019s inpainting, image-to-image generation, and upscaling (though the latter features was broken at press time).<\/p>\n<p>You can request Stable Diffusions\u2019 basic models, but also specialized models such as a version of Stable Diffusion trained on Midjourney. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/820518\/midjourneys-ai-art-goes-live-for-everyone.html\">While Midjourney does a fantastic job of creating AI art<\/a>, it also costs at least $10 per month \u2014 this model creates a \u201cfree\u201d version instead.) And because the Artbot\/Stable Horde service is essentially free, you can play around with what works and what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>There is a tiny bit of a catch: the kudos system. To prevent abuse of the system, the developer implemented a system where every request \u201ccosts\u201d some amount of kudos. Kudos mean nothing except in terms of priority: each request subtracts kudos from your balance, putting you in \u201cdebt.\u201d Those with the most debts get placed lowest in the queue. But if there are many clients contributing AI art, that really doesn\u2019t matter, as even users with enormous kudos debts will see their requests fulfilled in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Images won\u2019t automatically download, but you can go to the Images tab and then manually download them. <\/p>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/b2c-contenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Artbot-2.png?w=1200\" alt=\"Stable Horde Artbot image generation\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption>Artbot gives you a lot of options to create images,  with helpful explantory text hidden behind the \u201ci\u201d icons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark Hachman \/ IDG<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"contributing-your-gpu-to-stable-horde-earns-you-kudos\">Contributing your GPU to Stable Horde earns you kudos<\/h2>\n<p>But there\u2019s a way to earn kudos, too: add your GPU to the Stable Horde.  Each request you fulfill earns you kudos. Furthermore, if you\u2019re actively contributing to the Horde, you can submit art requests and they\u2019ll take priority.<\/p>\n<p>Joining your GPU to the Horde requires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/916785\/creating-ai-art-local-pc-stable-diffusion.html\">downloading and running Stable Diffusion.<\/a> It\u2019s not entirely clear whether every fork of Stable Diffusion should work, but you can try. (Setting up Stable Diffusion means signing up a free account at the AI repository, , with a username and password.)<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll then to download the bridge itself. Go to\u00a0\u00a0and download and install\u00a0, according to the . You can then run the Horde Bridge manually (or download it via Linux, if you prefer.)  Once you install it, you\u2019ll need to set up the bridge with a Horde username and password, as well as the Horde API key, then restart the horde-bridge script.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to keep your PC\u2019s GPU connected and powering the Horde 24\/7, as you can either disconnect or put your system into a \u201cmaintenance mode\u201d that essentially tells the Horde that your PC is unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also fair to say that contributing your GPU to the Stable Horde isn\u2019t for everyone. For one thing, running a powerful GPU costs money, and the extra electricity cost needs to be factored in.
