This rout was worse than the one during the<strong> <\/strong><span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"http:\/\/economyria.com\/the-financial-crisis-2008-explained\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"http:\/\/economyria.com\/the-financial-crisis-2008-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2008 global financial crisis<\/a><\/span>, when FIIs pulled out roughly $<!-- -->12 billion from Indian stocks<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"sc-1ucrg8x-0 gCryFr embed-inset embed-inset--show-overlay\"><kinja-sandbox contenteditable=\"false\" classname=\"wysiwyg-embed datawrapper\"><\/kinja-sandbox><\/aside>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Still, the Indian benchmark indices\u2014Nifty50 and Sensex\u2014are ending the year up 3<!-- -->%, which has been possible only because of <!-- -->domestic institutional investors,<!-- --> <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/stocks\/marketstats\/fii_dii_activity\/index.php\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/stocks\/marketstats\/fii_dii_activity\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who bought <!-- -->$32.9 billion<\/a><\/span> worth of equities <!-- -->in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 huxVoY\" id=\"h696458\">What\u2019s ahead for Indian stocks in 2023?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">During the pandemic years, the fillip to Indian equities came from a significant easing of monetary policy by global central banks, when investors parked funds in high-yielding assets such as Indian stocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">But the US Federal Reserve\u2019s rate hikes this year\u2014the <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/feds-aggressive-rate-hikes-are-a-game-changer-11669032623510.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/feds-aggressive-rate-hikes-are-a-game-changer-11669032623510.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most aggressive in four decades<\/a><\/span>\u2014reversed the flow of funds into stock markets. Instead, FIIs <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/qz.com\/indian-it-stocks-fell-the-most-this-year-since-2008-1849896951\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/indian-it-stocks-fell-the-most-this-year-since-2008-1849896951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">directed their money<\/a><\/span> into bonds. As of <!-- -->November, the <!-- -->bulk <!-- -->of foreign funds leaving Indian equities came from the financial and IT sectors, in both of which FII ownership is high. So far, FIIs have sold $8.42 billion worth of financial sector equities and $8.83 billion worth of IT stocks, according to NSDL data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Analysts <!-- -->expect foreign investors to return sporadically in the beginning of 2023 <!-- -->and more steadily <!-- -->in the second half of the year,<!-- --> <!-- -->as China\u2019s economy reopens and the <!-- -->global macroeconomic <!-- -->environment improves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\"> \u201cOverall, Indian stocks are likely to continue performing better in comparison to other major economies and expected to give 10%-15% return in 2023,\u201d <!-- -->Mohit Ralhan, the <!-- -->CEO of TIW Capital,<!-- --> a Singapore-based<!-- --> asset management firm, wrote <!-- -->in a note.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Analysts also expect that <span><a class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fEbCZJ js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/stock-market-news\/fpis-diis-or-retail-investors-who-will-dominate-markets-in-2023-11672156511868.html\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/stock-market-news\/fpis-diis-or-retail-investors-who-will-dominate-markets-in-2023-11672156511868.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">domestic investors<\/a><\/span> will continue to boost <!-- -->Indian equities in the year to come<!-- -->.
