Pauline Hanson barred reporters from multiple publications from her Melbourne event. Not me, but that didn’t prevent me from having one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had in journalism.

“We’ve got Rebel News here, I’m happy with them,” Pauline Hanson replied when questioned about her banning of the ABC, The Guardian and The Age from a press conference where she announced One Nation’s Victorian state election candidates. Rebel News is a far-right Canadian online outlet whose Australian subsidiary is run by commentator Avi Yemini.
“Don’t you need your message to get out to regional Victoria in particular, and [don’t] you need The ABC, the national broadcaster, to be able to carry it?” she had been asked by a reporter.
