Harvey Barnes revealed Newcastle United’s “ultimate goal is to go all the way” in the EFL Cup after their win over West Brom.
The Magpies booked their place in the third round with a 3-2 win at St. James’ Park, with Barnes netting the winner in the 81st minute.
West Brom took the lead through Isaac Price early on, but Newcastle were level going into the break as Bazoumana Toure scored his first goal for the club.
Newcastle, who unveiled new signing Nico Gonzalez before kick-off, then took the lead early in the second half through half-time substitute Barnes after West Brom failed to clear their lines from a corner.
The Baggies levelled from the penalty spot as Price netted his second of the tie, but Barnes scored a brace of his own with a first-time finish from Amar Dedic’s low cross.

Despite conceding a penalty, Newcastle won the expected goals (xG) battle 2.83 to 1.49, with Barnes making a key contribution off the bench.
Barnes helped Newcastle end their 70-year wait for silverware by winning the EFL Cup in 2024-25, and he wants the Magpies to go for glory in the competition again.
“A few of the older players that are here have that, that taste of glory, that’s what we want,” said the Newcastle winger.
“The manager has had some success in his career and he wants that as well, that is why he has come here so there’s a real emphasis on that.
“The ultimate goal is to go all the way.”
After their win over West Brom, Newcastle will face Championship side Millwall away from home in the third round.
Newcastle have now won six of their last eight EFL Cup ties against teams from a lower division (D1 L1), winning each of their last four since a 1-0 defeat to Brentford in the 2020-21 quarter-final.
