Division II Football Program Lands Six-Figure Jersey Patch Deal Without NCAA’s Official Approval

College athletic departments are seeking new ways to make money, and sponsorships are becoming far more valuable. A Division II Football Program has just announced a jersey-patch agreement that Industry sources report is worth six figures annually.

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) Athletics department signed a new five-year partnership with Shelter Insurance. Based on the announcement from UCM Athletics, this agreement is positioned as the very first Division II jersey-patch sponsorship of its kind, though it remains pending NCAA approval.

The deal also stands as the largest sponsorship deal in UCM Athletics history. The main twist here is that the deal is officially announced, but the actual jersey patches cannot hit the field until NCAA rules change to permit them.

Shelter Insurance becomes the “Official Auto, Home, and Life Insurance Partner of UCM Athletics.” This includes all 17 Mules and Jennies varsity sports programs. The planned Shelter patches will appear on competition uniforms starting with the 2027-28 season, if the NCAA grants permission.

The NCAA approved commercial patches for Division I back in January 2026, but that decision did not apply to Division II programs.

During the upcoming 2026-27 season, Shelter will get its logo placed on the turf at Walton Stadium and Kennedy Field. Field and surface branding is currently a legal sponsorship asset. The school created immediate value for its partner while waiting for the uniform rules to change.

Matt Howdeshell, the UCM Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, views this as a major step forward. He said, “This is a monumental milestone for University of Central Missouri Athletics. Bringing together two legendary brands, the Mule Head and the Shelter Shield, is a natural alignment rooted in shared tradition, deep local roots, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

He then added, “UCM and Shelter Insurance share a rich history and a mutual dedication to serving our communities. Honoring that historic connection while blazing a new trail in collegiate athletics is something our student-athletes, campus, and alumni base can take immense pride in.”

The fate of this historic sponsorship now rests in the hands of the national governing body.

Football Why the NCAA Rules Could Decide UCM’s Jersey-Patch Future

Division II uniforms and equipment face strict limits on commercial branding. Right now, teams are stuck with a single manufacturer or distributor mark, along with title-sponsor provisions for limited events.

Division II programs can look at a Division I ruling for hope. The NCAA Division I Cabinet approved commercial patches on January 23, 2026.

Because of that change, starting this August, those programs can place up to two extra sponsor logos on their jerseys during most games. They can also place one additional logo on the equipment.

Division II leaders are also looking into making similar changes. The Division II Management Council started a process in the spring of 2026 to gather membership feedback regarding commercial logo use. However, this is just a review and feedback phase, not a final stamp of approval.

Sponsorship money like this can help pay for scholarships, facility upgrades, coaching salaries, and a better overall student-athlete experience. The school’s championship history in the MIAA gives the sponsor a platform across many different sports.

This partnership also features a personal connection to the school. Rockne Corbin, who took over as the President and CEO of Shelter Insurance in 2024, has been with the company since 1991.

More importantly, Corbin is a UCM alumnus who graduated in 1986. He stated that this partnership represents a natural alignment of values centered on education and community preparation.

The upcoming January 2027 NCAA Convention will determine if these planned patches see the field.
