Boltz Halts Bitcoin Swaps Indefinitely as AI-Powered Attacks Overwhelm Service

Bitcoins

  • Boltz suspended its Bitcoin swap service indefinitely after sustained AI-assisted attacks overwhelmed its ability to safely maintain operations.
  • The company said customer funds remained protected because its non-custodial design leaves users in control of their Bitcoin throughout swaps.
  • Wallet providers relying on Boltz are working to restore affected services while refunds and customer support continue to operate.

Boltz has halted its Bitcoin swap platform indefinitely after concluding that a wave of AI-assisted attacks had outpaced its ability to maintain the service securely. The non-custodial provider said swap services are suspended until further notice and it cannot estimate when they will return, as recent security reviews found it could not safely restart operations while facing continued attacks.

According to the company, automated attempts to identify weaknesses have increased steadily over recent months, with several exploits successfully contained before attackers rapidly developed new methods faster than fixes could be implemented.

Boltz said the decision was unrelated to any single security breach and instead reflected an ongoing campaign by multiple well-resourced groups targeting its infrastructure.

Refunds Still Available

The company emphasised that users’ Bitcoin remained protected because its non-custodial architecture leaves customers in control of their own assets throughout every swap, while any operational losses were absorbed internally.

Refund services remain available through the platform’s API for eligible transactions, unilateral refunds continue to operate without relying on Boltz infrastructure, and customer support is still accessible.

The outage has disrupted swap capabilities used by wallets including Aqua, Bull Bitcoin and ZEUS, prompting efforts to restore services or temporarily disable connected infrastructure. Boltz also holds approximately US$262,000 (AU$372,040) in total value locked.
