JOHANNESBURG – Musician and TV personality Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye will now appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

While Maarohanye was expected to make his first court appearance on Monday, police have now confirmed that he will only be in the dock on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old was arrested at the weekend on charges of kidnapping, unlawful discharge of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice.

Police allege that he confronted an e-hailing driver in Edenvale, accusing him of having a relationship with his girlfriend.

He forced him into a vehicle and fired a shot in his direction. The driver escaped unharmed and reported the incident to police, leading to Maarohanye’s arrest.

This is not the first time Maarohanye has faced legal trouble. He was convicted in 2012 over a crash that killed four schoolchildren.

In 2024, charges of rape, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were withdrawn.

Jub Jub brush with the law:

March 2010: Killed four school children, injured two others – Maarohanye and his friend Themba Tshabalala were involved in a tragic car crash in Protea, Soweto. While drag racing in Mini Coopers under the influence of drugs, they plowed into a group of schoolchildren, killing four and severely injuring two others

December 2012: Convicted and jailed for 25 years – Both were initially convicted of murder and attempted murder, and sentenced to 25 years in prison each. But on 8 October 2014, the South Gauteng High Court overturned their murder convictions, reducing the charge to culpable homicide. Their sentences were subsequently reduced to 10 years, two of which were suspended.

January 2017: Released on parole – Having served their minimum required time, both men were released on parole

July 2023: Arrested on rape charge, attempted murder and assault – Maarohanye was arrested on charges of rape, attempted murder and assault after police concluded an investigation into sexual assault allegations made by actress Amanda du-Pont last year.

July 2024: Charges withdrawn – The NPA withdrew all rape, attempted murder, and assault charges against Maarohanye in July 2024. The NPA cited that after careful review of the police docket and defense representations, there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution

June 2026: Arrested in Edenvale – The TV star and musician was arrested on charges of kidnapping, unlawful discharge of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice.
