Christantus Uche breaks silence after suffering season-long knee injury

Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has broken his silence after suffering a serious knee injury that is expected to rule him out for the entire 2026/27 season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian midfielder sustained the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against Monaco following a heavy challenge from defender Christian Mawissa. Uche was forced off on a stretcher, with initial examinations suggesting severe bruising to the joint.

However, further medical tests revealed a far more serious problem. According to Diario AS, an MRI scan confirmed multiple injuries to Uche’s right knee, with severe damage to both the ligaments and meniscus. The 23-year-old is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days.

The setback comes at a particularly painful moment for Uche, who had returned to Getafe determined to revive his career after a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace.

He had hoped to play a bigger role under José Bordalás and use regular football in Spain to rebuild his confidence and strengthen his position in the Super Eagles squad, and potentially seal a move to a bigger club. Instead, those plans have been put on hold for at least a year.

Uche admitted that his current reality is one of the toughest moments of his career, acknowledging the difficulty of accepting that he will spend a prolonged period away from football.

“Today is one of the toughest days of my career,” Uche wrote on his Instagram page.

“Following the latest medical tests, it has been confirmed that my knee injury is serious and that I face a long recovery process.”

The former Crystal Palace midfielder also opened up about the emotional impact of the injury, explaining why being away from the pitch will be difficult for him.

“I won’t lie: accepting that I will be sidelined for a while is hard. Football is my passion, my job, and what makes me happiest, and now I have to face a situation I never imagined.”

Despite the severity of the setback, Uche insisted that he is determined to approach the rehabilitation process with the right mentality.

“But challenges are part of the journey, too. I am going to face this period with strength, patience, and determination, working every day to get back to doing what I love most: playing football.”

Uche also thanked those who have supported him since the injury, including his family, teammates, coaching staff and Getafe’s medical team.

“I want to thank my family, my teammates, the coaching staff, the medical team, and the entire Getafe CF family from the bottom of my heart for standing by me.”

“And a special thanks to all the fans who have sent me messages of support.”

The injury is another major obstacle in a career that had appeared to be entering an important new phase. After struggling for regular minutes during his spell in England, Uche returned to Getafe hoping to establish himself as an important player and put himself firmly in the plans of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.

He had already earned three senior international caps and was viewed as a player capable of adding versatility to Nigeria’s midfield. His absence is therefore also a blow to the Super Eagles ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

For now, however, the focus is no longer on transfers, international football or proving himself at club level. Uche’s immediate challenge is simply to recover fully from the most serious injury of his young career.

The road back will be long, but the Nigerian midfielder has made it clear that he intends to face it with patience and determination.
