Saints Training Camp Week 1 Injury Update

Since rebuilding their entire training staff, the New Orleans Saints have seen a positive impact on their team. Even though there were some major injuries throughout last season- that’s always going to happen in football- the pesky soft tissue issues that plagued the team in the past have not been as prevalent.

This season, the hope was that their injury luck would continue, and although things could be worse, after Week 1, there have already been some issues that affect the roster. So, let’s look this week’s injury update for the Saints.

By now everybody knows about this one, but it’s important to still talk about. Bryan Bresee was set to be a major piece on the defensive line, and for his future career, it needed to be a big year from him. Instead, after suffering a knee injury, Bresee will be out for the entire season.

For the Saints’ defensive line, it’s going to be harder for the Saints to deal with this loss, and for Bresee, this puts extreme pressure on him next season. It’s going to be a contract year, and if Bresee can’t bounce back and show improvement, the Saints may not bring him back.

Before training camp, DT Christen Miller was dealing with some injury issues, but has been healthy since. He is an extremely important piece of the defensive line, just like Bresee was, but Miller’s main spot will be at nose tackle. Miller should be the heir apparent to Davon Godchaux, and staying on the field could accelerate that.

Recently, it was announced that Miller suffered a very minor toe injury, and it seems that he will be day-to-day moving forward.

The RB depth on the Saints roster must stay healthy to make it past cuts because the competition behind Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne will be close. Staying healthy is probably the most important factor for Kendre Miller, who has been unable to do just that. But he is currently dealing with a minor back injury, and if he can’t return soon, it may be something the coaching staff remembers.

Last on the updated injury report is guard Jeremiah Wright. Behind Cesar Ruiz, Wright has an oppurtunity to develop and be ready to step in if Ruiz gets injured or if the Saints just want to make a change. So far in training camp, Wright has been doing well and probably a bit better than many expected, but a recent shoulder injury has prevented him from participating.
