Super Eagles and former Crystal Palace midfielder Christantus Uche is set to miss the entire 2026/27 season after suffering a serious right-knee injury, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian midfielder sustained the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against Monaco after a heavy challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa.

Uche initially left the pitch on a stretcher, with early examinations suggesting he had suffered a severe bruise to the joint. However, further tests on Friday delivered a far more serious diagnosis.

According to Diario AS, an MRI scan confirmed that Uche has suffered multiple injuries to his right knee, with severe damage to both the ligaments and meniscus.

The 23-year-old is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Soccer Christantus Uche’s season over after devastating injury

The injury represents a major setback for Uche, who had been hoping to make a fresh start at Getafe after a difficult spell in English football.

He returned to the Madrid-based club following his loan spell in England, where he struggled to get the playing time and confidence he needed to establish himself.

Uche had returned to Getafe determined to prove his worth and play a key role under manager José Bordalás. Instead, his season has been cut short before the competitive campaign could properly begin.

The report revealed that the midfielder was left devastated by the diagnosis, with sources close to the Getafe dressing room describing him as struggling to come to terms with the severity of the injury.

It is also believed that the challenge from Mawissa was the incident that caused extensive damage to the joint.

Soccer Blow for Super Eagles’ AFCON 2027 plans

Uche’s injury is also likely to complicate Nigeria’s plans for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign next month, and Uche’s versatility in midfield had made him one of the players who could have provided another option for Nigeria from Chelle’s preferred midfield trio.

His absence means Nigeria will have to look elsewhere for midfield depth as the Super Eagles begin their journey towards the tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The injury could also deprive Uche of an opportunity to establish himself as a regular member of the senior national team during an important period for Nigeria.

Having represented Nigeria three times at international level, the Getafe midfielder had hoped to continue progressing in the Super Eagles setup. Instead, his priority will now be recovering from the most serious injuries of his young career.

Soccer Long road back for Uche

Uche will undergo surgery in the coming days, with the rehabilitation process expected to keep him away from competitive football for the remainder of the season.

The nature of the injury means there will be little reason for Getafe or Nigeria to rush his return. His goal is to complete his recovery and rebuild his fitness after a devastating start to what was supposed to be a season of redemption.

His return to the Super Eagles and the football pitch will now have to wait.
