How Rivers United became Nigeria’s highest-ranked club in Africa

Rivers United have replaced Enyimba as Nigeria’s highest-ranked club in the latest CAF rankings, following impressive performances in continental competitions over the last four seasons, Soccernet.ng reports.

CAF’s latest coefficient places the Port Harcourt club 24th on the continent with 15 ranking points, making them the highest-ranked Nigerian side ahead of former African champions Enyimba, who dropped to 45th with four points.

The achievement marks a significant shift in Nigerian club football, with Rivers United now carrying the country’s continental flag after years of Enyimba heading that conversation.

Soccer Consistency made the difference for Rivers United

Unlike several Nigerian clubs that qualified for CAF competitions only to suffer early exits, Rivers United consistently progressed deep enough to accumulate valuable ranking points.

CAF ranks clubs based on their performance over the last five seasons in continental tournaments, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. Points are awarded according to how far a team progresses, with recent seasons carrying more weight.

The Pride of Rivers reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons before qualifying for the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2025-26.

Those campaigns were decisive in boosting their CAF coefficient, eventually lifting them above every other Nigerian club.

Domestic improvement backed continental success

Rivers United’s continental rise has mirrored their consistency at home. After winning the NPFL title in the 2021/22 season, the Port Harcourt-based club have remained among the country’s strongest sides, finishing runners-up in the 2025-26 campaign with 67 points, just one behind champions Rangers International.

Under Finidi George, Rivers United won 19 of their 38 league matches, scoring 44 goals while conceding only 31, finishing with the division’s second-best defensive record.

That consistency ensured another return to continental football and further strengthened their position among Africa’s leading clubs.

Why Rivers United overtook Enyimba

For years, Enyimba’s two CAF Champions League titles and regular continental appearances made them Nigeria’s benchmark. However, recent seasons have told a different story.

While Rivers United continued collecting coefficient points through quarter-final and group-stage appearances, Enyimba struggled to make similar progress in CAF competitions.

Over the past five seasons, Enyimba’s continental campaigns have been highlighted by a trip to the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) group stage exits, only reaching the quarter-final of the inaugural African Football League.

Plenty of work left to do

Despite leading Nigeria’s rankings, Rivers United remain some distance behind Africa’s established elite.

CAF champions Mamelodi Sundowns lead the continent with 73 points, followed by Egypt’s Al Ahly (66), Tunisia’s Esperance (58) and Morocco’s RS Berkane (57).

That gap highlights both Rivers United’s impressive progress and the challenge facing Nigerian clubs if they hope to compete consistently with Africa’s biggest football powers.
