Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has revealed he did not know about Manuel Neuer’s likely plan to retire at the end of the 2026-27 season.
Twenty-two-year-old Urbig is on his way to becoming Bayern’s future first-choice goalkeeper, having joined from Koln in January 2025.
Last season, Urbig made 20 appearances across all competitions and kept six clean sheets while making 56 saves.
Neuer, meanwhile, played 42 times for Bayern last term (including the Club World Cup), before returning to the Germany setup for the World Cup.
However, having retired from international duty for a second time this summer, Neuer said “it certainly looks like I’m going to retire” at the end of the upcoming campaign.
Urbig was unaware of Neuer’s comments until informed by reporters during Bayern’s pre-season camp.
“I actually didn’t know he said that. I’m hearing it for the first time,” said Urbig.

“Generally speaking, the exchange I have with Manu is good, with Sven [Ulreich] and with the entire goalkeeping team.
“That’s a different topic and it concerns Manu. We’re just happy we have such a togetherness within our goalkeeping team.”
Bayern face Aston Villa and RB Leipzig in their final pre-season games before the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, in which they will take on Borussia Dortmund on August 22.
Vincent Kompany’s side then begin their Bundesliga title defence six days later, against Stuttgart.
