Large Salmonella and Listeria outbreaks hit Sweden in 2025

Published:

There were large foodborne outbreaks of Salmonella and Listeria in Sweden in 2025, according to a report from the Swedish Veterinary Agency (SVA).

A Salmonella outbreak in August 2025 led to 118 illnesses in 14 regions. The outbreak was traced to a laying hen farm, and once it was established that the pathogen was Salmonella Enteritidis, eggs from this farm were recalled. After whole genome sequencing, SVA confirmed that the strain was the same as that found in 2024 and an outbreak in 2022/2023. Salmonella Enteritidis is difficult to eradicate once it enters a laying hen facility. Despite measures in 2024, such as culling and extensive decontamination, the same strain was detected in 2025.
