Cowboys gave an unusual challenge to an important player

NFL football is as much a game of mental aptitude and psychological warfare as it is a showcase of raw physical ability. And for some players, those responsibilities grow large. That’s the case for green-dot linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

During the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp session on Thursday, his green-dot responsibilities put him under the microscope as head coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker orchestrated a little technological malfunction that provided a test for their young linebacker.

During team periods, the defense was trying to shut down a potent Cowboys offense when the coaching staff got a little fancy. Right in the middle of a crucial pre-snap sequence, Overshown’s radio went dead. It wasn’t a glitch or his battery dying. It was pure sabotage. The coaches purposely cut the communication line to see how his linebacker would handle himself.

No communication. No problem. With the time winding down and the offense shifting into formation, Overshown did not panic. No distress signals to the sideline. Instead, he took complete command of the situation. He got into the exact call he was supposed to. He had gone through this repeated times with the coaches in meetings, so there was no need to improvise. He knew exactly what he needed to do. This kind of poise under pressure is exactly why the Cowboys have such high expectations for Overshown, despite a career heavily disrupted by injuries. After missing his entire 2023 rookie season with a torn ACL, the former third-round pick flashed elite potential in 2024, racking up 90 tackles, five sacks, and a deflected-to-himself interception that he returned for a touchdown. He did this in just 13 games before a devastating multi-ligament knee injury ended his breakout season early.

He spent the majority of last year rehabbing that knee. Now, entering a contract year where he is completely healthy, this season represents a massive, career-defining moment for the young linebacker. He is playing not just for a permanent starting role as a defensive leader, but also to prove his resiliency and add a little financial job security in the NFL.

This little mind game was a good first test to see how Overshown would handle himself without a safety net. The Cowboys defense was notorious for in-game breakdowns last season, so it is critical to make sure their leaders have got their affairs in order and can get their troops organized, and do so in a hurry. By intentionally creating a chaotic environment, the coaches learned that Overshown has the mental fortitude necessary to be an on-field general.

Coaches try to make things as easy as possible for their players by providing the tools they need, but there is only so much direction available. Sometimes, they have to think for themselves and make split-second decisions. Training camp will tell them where they are with certain elements of the defense, and on Thursday, they learned that radio silence will not slow down their rising star linebacker. The communication may have cut off, but the message was received loud and clear, and that message is that Overshown is completely dialed into his new role on the defense.
