Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have stepped up efforts to sign Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika from Belgian champions Club Brugge this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Bundesliga side have admired the 25-year-old for some time and reignited their interest this summer as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign. Frankfurt are keen to return to European competition after narrowly missing out last season and see Onyedika as a key addition to their midfield.

The German club had an initial bid rejected by Belgian champions Club Brugge, where Onyedika has entered the final year of his contract. His current deal runs until the end of the 2026-27 season, and the midfielder has reportedly turned down attempts to extend his stay.

Saudi Pro League giants Al Ittihad are also in the race for the Nigerian. They are looking for a long-term replacement for veteran Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, whose contract expired at the end of last season.

According to Bild, via Get Football, Frankfurt have now returned with an improved offer worth up to €9 million as they try to convince Club Brugge to part ways with the Super Eagles star.

Frankfurt’s interest in Onyedika is nothing new. The Bundesliga club have tracked the Super Eagles midfielder for well over a year and now believe this summer represents their best chance to complete a deal.

With just one year left on his contract and no agreement over a renewal, Club Brugge risk losing the midfielder for nothing next summer. That has encouraged both Frankfurt and Al Ittihad to intensify their pursuit during the current transfer window.

However, Frankfurt’s latest bid still falls short of Club Brugge’s valuation, and it remains unclear whether the Belgian champions will soften their stance or continue to hold out for a higher fee.

The Bundesliga side view Onyedika as a player that would add the much-needed balance to their midfield. Frankfurt struggled defensively last season, conceding 65 league goals, which was the highest tally among the clubs in the top half of the standings.

The Super Eagles star’s ball-winning ability and effectiveness in transition also makes him an attractive option to strengthen the team’s defensive structure.

Frankfurt are also eager to beat Al Ittihad to his signature despite the Saudi club’s financial advantage. While Al Ittihad are capable of offering a significantly higher salary, Frankfurt hope the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga will persuade the midfielder to choose Germany.

Ultimately, the final decision now rests with Club Brugge. If the Belgian side accept Frankfurt’s improved offer, Onyedika could be set for a new challenge in the Bundesliga.

If not, the Super Eagles midfielder is likely to remain in Belgium and see out the final year of his contract before becoming a free agent next summer.
