Anduril and Archer unveiled an autonomous attack rotorcraft built on air taxi technology. First flight is planned for 2027.

TL;DR

Anduril and Archer unveiled Thunder at Farnborough, an autonomous attack VTOL built on a dual-use air taxi platform. Series hybrid-electric, tiltrotor, first flight 2027.

Anduril and Archer Aviation unveiled Thunder at the Farnborough International Airshow on Sunday, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft built on a jointly developed dual-use platform. The aircraft is designed to multiply the combat power of crewed attack and assault helicopters by operating alongside them without a pilot. It uses a series hybrid-electric powertrain and dual tiltrotors that vary RPM across flight regimes, reducing fuel burn in cruise and minimising acoustic signature during low-altitude approach.

The platform’s architecture is the news. Thunder is not a modified air taxi. It is a clean-sheet design that takes the commercial eVTOL sector’s work on electric propulsion, rotor design, and vertical takeoff and applies it to a weapons-carrying airframe. The tiltrotor configuration combines VTOL with wingborne cruise, enabling runway-independent operations from austere locations without the range limits of traditional helicopters. Archer has already completed multiple test flights with full-scale surrogate aircraft. Thunder’s own first flight is planned for 2027. Archer will announce the first commercial customers for the civilian variant later this week.

Anduril raised $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation earlier this year, doubling in eleven months, and Thunder shows where the money is going: autonomous aircraft that can be produced at commercial scale rather than traditional defence procurement timelines. Archer brings the manufacturing expertise. Its Midnight air taxi is the most advanced eVTOL in the US certification pipeline. The dual-use platform lets both companies amortise development costs across defence and commercial markets.

We couldn’t simply tweak our existing aircraft,” said Archer CEO Adam Goldstein. “We took a bold first principles approach alongside Anduril to develop what we believe is the most sophisticated vertical lift aircraft ever made.Shield AI raised $2 billion at $12.7 billion for its Hivemind autonomous combat pilot, and the autonomous military aircraft market is drawing capital at a pace that mirrors the AI lab funding race. Thunder’s bet is that the fastest path to a capable autonomous attack aircraft runs through the commercial eVTOL industry’s supply chain, not through a traditional defence contractor’s.
