Swedish Allsvenskan club AIK Stockholm has signed a new Nigerian midfielder, following the departure of Zadok Yohanna to Brighton, Soccernet.ng reports.

In recent years, Sweden has become a fertile ground for talented Nigerian players looking to kickstart their European careers. The spotlight on Nigerian talent has even intensified recently, as just two months ago, one of the country’s recent exports made headlines by shattering domestic football transfer records.

18-year-old Yohanna, who joined AIK last year from Ikon Allah FC, was sold to English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion for a record €28 million.

This figure stands by a significant margin as the highest fee an Allsvenskan club has ever received for a player. That historic transfer has created a ripple effect, with more European clubs — particularly those in Scandinavia — increasing their focus on Nigerian prospects.

Soccer Why Have AIK Stockholm Signed Another Nigerian Player?

Nigerian academy Beyond Limits have officially announced the transfer of midfielder Oreoluwa Agbenla to AIK Stockholm on a long-term deal. The Swedish club corroborated the news, confirming that the 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract.

The youngster will not jump straight into the first team, instead, he will develop within the club’s academy structure before being integrated into the senior squad.

Agbenla is a high-octane midfielder known for his ability to read the game. He possesses the work rate to press effectively when his team is out of possession and has a keen eye for goal when opportunities arise in the final third.

The teenager was a member of Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 U-17 WAFU Cup. Although that team’s tournament run was short-lived, Agbenla will now look to make a lasting impression at AIK, aiming to follow in the footsteps of many Nigerian players who have used the Swedish league as a springboard to Europe’s elite clubs.
