The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a winning note, defeating Senegal 2-1 in an international friendly played in Ikenne-Remo earlier today, June 5.
The reigning African champions took control early and dictated much of the game, showing the composure and attacking sharpness Head Coach Justine Madugu will hope to carry into the tournament in Morocco.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Nigeria were awarded a penalty. Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala stepped up and calmly converted to hand the hosts the lead. It was Oshoala’s first appearance for the Super Falcons since the WAFCON 2024 final, and she marked her return with a confident finish.
Nigeria continued to press forward after the opener, moving the ball with purpose and stretching the Senegalese defence. Their dominance paid off again 11 minutes later when Toni Payne capped a flowing attacking move to double the advantage.
Like Oshoala, Payne was making her return to the national team after her last outing at WAFCON 2024, and she wasted little time making an impact.
The Falcons remained largely in control for long periods, limiting Senegal’s opportunities while managing possession effectively. The visitors, however, found a late response in the 86th minute when they pulled a goal back to reduce the deficit and create a tense finish.
Despite the late pressure, Nigeria held firm to secure victory in what was the first-ever meeting between the Super Falcons and Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses.
The match formed part of both countries’ build-up to the WAFCON, with Nigeria looking to fine-tune preparations ahead of their title defence in Morocco.
Both sides will meet again at the same venue on June 8 for a second friendly as Madugu continues to assess his squad ahead of the tournament.
