Dutch referee Rob Dieperink, who was set to serve as a VAR referee at the World Cup but was removed from the tournament roster due to allegations of sexual assault, has died at the age of 38. ‘INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE FOUND’

Dieperink, who was detained by the Metropolitan Police in London, the capital of England, in May, had been under investigation on allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Following the investigation, the prosecution decided that there was no need to file charges, citing “insufficient evidence.”

However, while the investigation was still ongoing, FIFA removed Dieperink from the World Cup referee roster and appointed French referee Willy Delajod in his place.

‘I WAS FALSELY ACCUSED,’ HE SAID

Speaking to the Dutch press after his removal from the tournament, Dieperink denied the allegations and maintained that he had been treated unfairly.

“I have cooperated fully with the police investigation from the very beginning. I also immediately informed FIFA, UEFA, and the Dutch Football Federation. I am deeply disappointed to have missed the World Cup,” the Dutch referee said, adding that he was grateful for the support the federation had provided him throughout the process.

Following Dieperink’s death, the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) issued a written statement expressing its deep sorrow.

The statement read, “With Rob’s passing, the refereeing community has lost a highly valued referee with international experience, but above all, a good and dedicated friend. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.”

HE HAD OFFICIATED HIS LAST MATCH LAST WEEK

Dieperink, who began his refereeing career in 2012, had continued his active duties following the incident that led to his arrest. The Dutch referee most recently officiated a preseason match between Go Ahead Eagles and Apollon last weekend.

Official authorities have not yet provided a detailed explanation regarding the cause of Dieperink’s death.
