Kwalee Labs, the development team behind the recently released Luna Abyss, has just been made redundant.

The team was only made up of nine people, but all of them suddenly find themselves out of work despite launching the aforementioned game, which has been received very well by critics and players.

The news comes from LinkedIn, where CEO of Kwalee Labs, Hollie Emery, confirms the unfortunate update.

“Unfortunately as of yesterday, the entire team has been made redundant; a decision that was completely outside of our control,” she writes. “As a result, the entire team are available for work as of today.”

“We’re enamoured by the love and support [Luna Abyss] received both by our industry and critically by journalists and media. Whilst we faced many challenges along the way, it has been the highlight of our careers – and we are incredibly proud that it has finally seen the light of day (thank you to everyone who believed in us!).”

Luna Abyss is a sci-fi first-person shooter that mixes in bullet hell-style action and some platforming for good measure. We really liked it, giving it an 8/10 in our review and praising its satisfying progression and fun gameplay.

It’s a real shame to see the team out of work despite releasing a great game only a few weeks prior.

Sadly, it seems the industry is far from done with layoffs; reports have been coming in from various places that Xbox, and potentially other large publishers, will be making sweeping redundancies in the near future.
