Katsina gets upgraded public health emergency centre

The Federal Government has inaugurated an expanded Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Katsina State to improve disease surveillance, immunisation coordination, polio eradication activities, and response to public health emergencies in the state.

The upgraded facility was delivered through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and eHealth Africa.

Speaking during the inauguration at the Katsina State Emergency Operations Centre on Friday, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Shamsudeen Yahaya, said the expansion was aimed at strengthening emergency coordination and healthcare response across the state.

He explained that the centre was initially established as a Polio Emergency Coordination Centre but had now been upgraded to handle wider public health emergencies, adding that the facility forms part of projects being showcased during activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Dr. Yahaya said the centre was equipped with modern communication facilities and operational tools to support rapid response during outbreaks and other health emergencies.

He added that the facility has stable electricity supply, internet connectivity, and a conducive working environment for health professionals, development partners, and emergency response teams.

He said the expansion became necessary due to the increasing demand for a more coordinated approach to managing public health issues beyond polio eradication. According to him, the new facility would strengthen rapid response mechanisms and improve the state’s capacity to effectively address public health challenges.
