August Burns Red are a big name in the metalcore scene, and they’ve been continuing to prove it for over two decades. Their latest entry, Season of Surrender – out now – is yet more proof that these guys are right where they belong.
Okay, yes, the album isn’t taking the band in a vastly new direction, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. ABR have once again leaned into what they do best, and what results is a record that feels both familiar and refreshingly new all at the same time. It’s a record brimming with crushing riffs, expert musicianship, and a perfect balance of aggression and genuine emotion, with moments that will remind fans of some of their most loved releases but brings its own feel; drawing from their past without getting lost in it. It shows that these guys have so much more left to give.
While there are plenty of highlights, “Den of Thieves” had to be one of my favourites. It had this raw energy that pulled me in until the song was over. It really reminded me of everything I love about these guys. Vocalist, Jake Luhrs is fantastic – and not just on this track, on this album as a whole. The intensity of his vocals is incredible. An absolute stand out.
August Burns Red are not just going through the motions; they’re not just putting out the same record as before. They’re showing their fans that they don’t need to change who they are at their core to produce something that sounds good. Season of Surrender continues the band’s legacy, proves they have plenty more to say, and will absolutely leave fans wanting more. Lots to love for old fans and newcomers alike!
