Rail Accident Investigation Branch continues to gather evidence at scene of crash
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said on Saturday that its inspectors continued to gather evidence at the scene.
“RAIB inspectors continue to gather evidence at the site of yesterday’s collision between two trains near Elstow,” RAIB said via a statement shared to X.
“RAIB will conduct a full, independent safety investigation into this tragic accident. We will provide a further update in the coming days once we know more.”
Passenger describes witnessing “life-threatening, major injuries, minor injuries” in train collision
Passenger Pete Knapp described people “crying, screaming” and said some seemed to have major injuries after the crash on Friday, where the front of the 4.40pm departure from Corby to London St Pancras was heavily damaged when it crashed into the rear of the 3.50pm departure from Nottingham, to the same destination.
The Corby train also had damage to the rear of the carriages which had been shunted into ones in front.
Dr Knapp told the Press Association: “There was a moment of being flung into the chair in front, and then I saw smoke.
“People were crying, screaming, people were so scared and confused.”
The 40-year-old said he saw people with “life-threatening, major injuries, minor injuries” as well as “people with bandages, people who couldn’t see straight”, while others like him were still able to walk.
Furious Bedford train passenger hits out over Friday crash
An angry train passenger has lashed out over Friday’s train collision in Bedford that killed one, and left a further 99 people injured with 28 of those still in hospital.
Passenger Brett Byatt has hit out as he believes the accident was preventable.
He told the BBC he was among three or four people in his carriage who were not injured, adding: “Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely, or a situation where they couldn’t stand, or couldn’t move their neck, or I saw a woman’s snapped leg.”
Mr Byatt, a teacher, who lives in Bedford, said he was feeling “angry” the morning after the collision.
“I don’t know at whom, who specifically, but it’s more about we’ve got one of the oldest railway networks and signal failures happen a lot, and now I’m just wondering… why wasn’t that signalled to my train and why did that train driver lose his life over this?” he said.

EMR investigating cause
East Midlands Railway managing director Will Rogers said: “We are currently on the scene and working closely with Network Rail and the emergency services to support those involved and assist with the ongoing response.
“Once those directly impacted have been helped, we will make every effort to ascertain the cause in co-operation with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.”
Sadiq Khan calls for investigation
Sadiq Khan has called for a “full investigation” into the crash and expressed his gratitude for the emergency services and transport staff.
He said: “My thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic train crash in Bedford, where a train driver has sadly lost their life and passengers have been injured. There must be a full investigation, reporting as soon as possible.”

Passenger ‘trying to keep nurse conscious’
Passenger Brett Byatt said he wanted to highlight the “humanity” of people on the train as people tried to help each other through the devastating aftermath.
He consoled a woman with a broken leg, telling Sky News: “She was a nurse… essentially on the verge of fainting. I was trying to keep her conscious.”
Police Federation sends ‘deepest condolences’
The Police Federation of England and Wales offered its “deepest condolences” to the loved ones of the train driver who was killed in the crash.
It said: “Our thoughts remain with the victims involved in the Bedford train collision. We are also thinking of our BTP (British Transport Police) and Bedfordshire Police colleagues and all emergency workers at this difficult time.”
Lord-Lieutenant issues tribute
Susan Lousada, the Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, paid tribute to the train driver who tragically died in the crash.
She wrote on X: “As Bedfordshire continues to come to terms with yesterday’s tragic rail accident, our thoughts remain with all those who were injured, affected, or anxiously awaiting news of loved ones.
“We also remember with great sadness the train driver who lost his life whilst carrying out his duties. Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”
Investigation updates ‘in coming days’

Number of injured people hits 100
Officials have now confirmed that 100 people were injured in the crash, 11 very seriously, 32 seriously, and 57 minorly.
‘Hero’ ticket inspector
Passenger Mareks Grabovskis hailed the ticket inspector on the train to Corby as a “hero” after he went flying in the collision and passed out. He woke up on the floor to see people “covered in blood” and screaming.
He told BBC News of the inspector: “I could see he was in pain himself, but he was telling someone on the radio to close the lines and checking if everyone else was okay.”
He added: “I was about to board the first carriage, but there were too many people because the train only had four carriages, so at the last second I moved to the last carriage.
“It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life, and I know how fortunate I am to be here today.”
Rapid Relief Team to return with breakfast for Bedford crash responders
The Rapid Relief Team has praised the dedication of emergency workers responding to the fatal train crash near Bedford, confirming volunteers remain on hand to support crews.
In a post on X, the charity said its Biggleswade volunteers were providing welfare support at the scene and would return to serve breakfast as recovery efforts continued.
The organisation added: “It is truly an honour to stand behind those on the frontline, supporting their welfare needs as they remain focused and resolute in the face of an incredibly difficult situation.”

No fire had broken out, fire chief confirms
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer, Andy Hopkinson, told a press conference near the scene of the rail crash:
“I’d like to start by extending my condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who tragically lost their life. Our thoughts are also with those who were injured, and everyone affected by what was a deeply distressing event.
“Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 5.14pm to reports of a collision involving two passenger trains just south of Bedford.
“We mobilised over 20 fire appliances and specialist vehicles and at the height of the response, over 70 firefighters and specialist officers were involved at the scene. This included specialist resources from neighbouring services.
“There was no fire, and our crews worked alongside other partner agencies to undertake rescues and assist with the evacuation of passengers from both trains.
“This was a major incident, requiring a substantial and co-ordinated emergency response. I’m immensely proud of our firefighters, fire control staff and officers, who responded with incredible professionalism, courage and compassion in very difficult circumstances.
“I also want to thank our blue light colleagues and all of the multi-agency partners and Blevec volunteers who came together in a highly effective response under the umbrella of the Bedfordshire Local Resilience Forum.

‘There will be a lot of questions’ – BTP chief on Bedford train crash
British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi has sought to reassure the public that a full investigation into Friday’s fatal train crash is under way.
Speaking at a press conference, she thanked the ambulance service and NHS for their response before stressing that specialist investigators are working to establish exactly what happened.
She said:
“There will, of course, be a lot of questions as to what exactly happened last night. I would really like to reassure everyone that specialist investigators from British Transport Police are working with colleagues at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to gather the facts and determine what has happened.”

Ambulance service reveals full breakdown of Bedford train crash injuries
Paul Gates, deputy chief paramedic at the East of England Ambulance Service provided a breakdown of conditions of those injured.He said:
“Tragically, as you just heard, one person sadly died at scene. 11 people sustained very serious injuries, and a further 32 serious injuries. A further 56 others also suffered minor injuries.”They took 54 people to six hospitals, while those with less serious injuries were treated at the scene, Mr Gates said.“We dispatched a significant number of resources, including more than 20 ambulances, specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams, and six air ambulances. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.
“We also extend our sincere thanks to all emergency service colleagues for their swift, coordinated and professional response.”

As part of a briefing, British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said 99 people were injured in Friday’s fatal train crash near Bedford.
80 casualties were taken to hospital, with 28 people still receiving treatment.
The injured include:

-32 people with serious injuries
-56 people with minor injuries

British Transport Police has provided an update on those injured in Friday’s fatal train crash, revealing that 28 people remain in hospital with 9 in critical condition.
Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said nine of those patients are in a critical condition.
Speaking to reporters, she also offered her “deepest condolences” to the family of the train driver who died in the collision.

A survivor of the Bedford train crash has relived the moment two trains collided, describing an “almighty impact”, a cabin door smashing and things “flying around” everywhere.
Simon Bentley and his wife were on their way from Kettering to London when an East Midlands Railway (EMR) service smashed into the back of another train on the same line shortly after 5pm on Friday.
Part of Network Rail route remains closed as damage assessment continues
Part of Network Rail’s East Midlands route remains closed as emergency services and specialist teams continue to assess the damage caused by Friday’s fatal train crash.
Route director Mark Budden said Network Rail was “deeply saddened” by the death of one of its colleagues and that supporting those affected remains the “absolute priority”.
He added: “We know passengers will want to understand when services can resume. We will provide updates as soon as we have a clearer understanding of the recovery work required and when the railway can safely reopen.”
Mr Budden said Network Rail teams are working closely with industry partners, response teams and the emergency services as recovery efforts continue.

Passenger Brett Byatt has shared further details of Friday’s fatal Bedford train crash in interviews with the BBC, describing the moments after the collision.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he said he heard a “boom” followed by “shrieks and groans of pain” less than five minutes after his train left Bedford station.
Byatt also told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that passengers were left with injuries after being thrown into one another, with some suffering wounds that were “bleeding profusely”.
He praised the emergency response, estimating that crews arrived at the scene in less than 10 minutes after the crash.
The injuries known so far
British Transport Police confirmed that the driver of one of the trains died in the crash and that his family has been informed.
89 people in total were injured in the collision, according to the East of England Ambulance Service.
–11 people suffered very serious injuries.
-22 people sustained serious injuries.
-56 people were left with minor injuries.
A number of passengers were treated at the scene, while others were taken to hospital.
Witnesses described people with facial injuries, broken bones and heavy bleeding after the impact.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said:
“Officers were called to a collision between two East Midlands Railway trains on the railway line in Elstow at around 5.15pm yesterday (19 June).
Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. He is the driver of one of the trains involved and his family have been informed. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and with our colleagues at East Midlands Trains.
33 people were taken to hospital with 11 of those in a serious condition. 56 other people were treated for injuries.

‘Why did that train driver lose his life?’ Survivor’s fury after rail disaster
A passenger on board said he was feeling “angry” the morning after the crash.
Brett Byatt told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme:

“This morning, it feels surreal, and I think I’ve moved into the stage of anger now. I’m feeling pretty angry.”

Road remains closed as police continue Bedford train crash investigation
Police remained near the scene of a fatal train crash near Bedford last night.
The Ampthill Road is closed from the Interchange Retail Park roundabout to Manor Road in Kempston Hardwick.
A British Transport Police officer was standing by the road closure sign on the roundabout exit, to divert drivers.
A Rail Accidents Investigation Branch van and a Deutsche Bahn vehicle have been allowed to drive on to the closed road.

Passenger says 90% of people in his carriage were injured
A passenger on one of the trains that collided said he thought 90% of people on his carriage had serious injuries, could not stand or move their neck.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Brett Byatt said:
“The people in first class ended up with stomach and rib injuries, because they went into the tables they have in first class, and EMR (East Midlands Railway) trains, the way that they’re structured with seats, was probably the worst way it could have been structured for a train crash, in the sense that there’s nothing… because they’re, they face each other in the three by three and the two by three, and the seat… when people flew into one another, the seats that they were on, like, broke backwards into the people behind them.”
The teacher, who lives in Bedford and was unharmed in the crash, added:
“I’ve said before that I’d probably say 90% of the people on my carriage had injuries, I’d probably say from three to four of us were uninjured in a full carriage.
“Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely, or a situation where they couldn’t stand, or couldn’t move their neck, or I saw a woman’s snapped leg.“
EMR issues heartfelt statement after fatal Bedford train collision
East Midlands Railway has said it is “deeply saddened” after one of its services was involved in Friday’s fatal crash near Bedford.
In a statement, the operator confirmed the collision between the 4.40pm Corby to London St Pancras service and the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras service “tragically” resulted in the death of an EMR driver and injuries to a number of passengers.

Thameslink has said it is “deeply saddened” by Friday’s fatal train crash and has offered support to those affected.
In a statement, the rail operator said: “We are deeply saddened by the incident involving East Midlands Railway yesterday, and our thoughts are with everyone affected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Travel expert believes automatic warning system issue may have led to Bedford crash
Travel expert Simon Calder said he believes the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras service came to a halt after a problem with the railway’s automatic warning system.
The 4.40pm Corby to London St Pancras service was then travelling on the same southbound line when it struck the stationary train.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Calder explained that the automatic warning system alerts drivers when they are approaching a red signal.
He said: “While the driver apparently was trying to sort out that, the 4.40pm (service)… was on the same southbound line and collided with the stationary train.”
Mr Calder added: “The pictures we are seeing are just shocking. For the train to have struck with such force that we’ve had a derailment is really worrying.
“Of course, railways are in general extremely safe. The rolling stock itself is designed to withstand collisions.”
He also said the UK’s rail network safety record is “pretty much the envy of the world”.
‘It’s vital’ to let emergency services work, says TSSA
The TSSA has said it is “vital” that emergency services are allowed to carry out their work following the fatal train crash near Bedford.
General secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “It’s vital now to let the emergency services do their work.”
She added: “Safety on our railways is always our number one priority and it’s devastating to hear of the collision of these two East Midlands Railway trains.”
The union leader said the thoughts of the entire TSSA are with the passengers, rail staff and emergency service workers involved, sending them “all our solidarity”.

The train driver killed in Friday’s fatal crash near Bedford was a former RMT union representative, the union has revealed.

National Rail has warned passengers travelling between London St Pancras International and Leicester of disruptions until at least the end of Saturday, as emergency services continue to deal with the incident.

Teresa Itabor, from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, was on her way to London to celebrate her birthday, the BBC reported.
“We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang… I didn’t know what was going on,” she said.
“My head hit the seat in front of me.”
“I opened my eyes and that’s when I saw people on the floor with blood everywhere.”

Union confirms train driver’s death
A train driver was killed and dozens of others were seriously injured when two passenger trains collided near Bedford.
The incident involved two East Midlands Railway (EMR) services, with one smashing into the back of the other on the same line shortly after 5pm on Friday.

Six air ambulances sent to the scene
The ambulance service said more than 20 ambulances, specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams, and six air ambulances, were sent to the scene of the collision.
Ambulance service declared major incident
The ambulance service said: “We quickly declared a major incident and put our emergency response plans into action.
“We sent a large number of resources to the scene, including more than 20 ambulances, specialist hazardous area response teams, and six air ambulances.”
They added: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we thank all emergency service colleagues for their swift response.”
Eleven people suffered ‘very serious’ injuries
Eleven people suffered “very serious” injuries and 22 were seriously injured in the train collision near Bedford, East of England Ambulance Service has said.
Patients with the most serious injuries have all now been taken from the scene to hospital.
A further 56 people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene or taken to hospital.
News of the crash was a ‘shock’
Police vehicles are on Progress Park where it is understood people are travelling to collect their loved ones who were on the train.
A number of ambulances and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue vehicles drove up nearby Ampthill Road which has been closed off by officers at the junction with the A5141 and A5134.
A helicopter has been circling overhead.
One local, who did not want to be named, said the news of the crash was a shock: “You don’t expect this in the UK.”
Network Rail issues update after ‘major incident’
Network Rail said the train crash near Bedford would cause disruption for the rest of Friday.
A spokesperson said: “A major incident has been declared following a collision between two East Midlands Railway trains between Luton and Bedford.
“We are supporting the efforts of emergency services on scene and are thoughts are with everyone involved.
“There is currently no Thameslink service between Luton and Bedford, and East Midlands Railway services to and from London St Pancras are suspended for the remainder of the day.
“Customers are advised not to travel on these routes and seek alternative travel arrangements.”

Statement from Mayor of the East Midlands
In a statement, Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “I’m shocked and concerned to hear that two East Midlands Railway Trains, one of which serves our region, have collided near Bedford this afternoon.
“My thoughts are with any impacted passengers and staff members aboard and I’d like to express my sincere thanks to the emergency services for their fast response.
“The Department for Transport is working with our emergency services, Network Rail and East Midlands Railway to ensure passengers and railway staff members are supported in the best way possible.
“Please avoid sharing unconfirmed reports until we hear officially from the emergency services or one of the agencies who run these services.”
At least one carriage derailed in the collision
Most carriages of the two southbound trains remained on the tracks but at least one derailed.

PM Starmer praises emergency services
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said his thoughts are with the family of the person who died in the train collision as well as the people who were injured.
In a statement on X, Sir Keir said: “Hugely concerning reports of a collision involving two passenger trains near Bedford.
“First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of the person who has sadly lost their life, and with those who have been seriously injured.
“I am grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident.”

A spokesperson for the BTP said: “Officers are continuing to respond to a collision between two trains on the line in Bedford, following reports around 5.15pm today (19 June).
“We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has very sadly died.
“A major incident has been declared, and officers are continuing to respond at the scene alongside colleagues from Bedfordshire Police and the local Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services.
“The collision involved two East Midlands Railway trains.”
BTP and Bedfordshire Police on scene to assist public
Deputy Chief Constable for BTP, Stuart Cundy, said: “We’ve declared a major incident and a significant emergency service response is ongoing. We’re working at pace to establish exactly what’s happened and will provide further information as soon as we are able to”.
“Officers from British Transport Police and Bedfordshire Police are on scene with colleagues from the local authority to assist any members of the public concerned about loved ones.”

One person has died after the collision, the British Transport Police said.

Bedford Hospital said: “Our hospitals are currently supporting the active incident in relation to the recent train crash in Bedford.
“We ask the public to avoid attending our Emergency Departments unless they have a genuine medical emergency. Please use NHS services appropriately.
“Further updates will be provided when it is appropriate to do so.”
Passenger ‘flung into the chair in front’
Passenger Pete Knapp described people “crying, screaming” and said some seemed to have major injuries.
“There was a moment of being flung into the chair in front, and then I saw smoke. People were crying, screaming, people were so scared and confused,” he also said.
Line to remain closed
The line is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day after the collision between the two EMR trains.

Local MP urges people ‘do not come to Bedford Station’
The MP for North Bedfordshire, Richard Fuller, has filmed a brief video outside the station talking to staff and residents.
In the video, he urged people to avoid Bedford Station and, instead, to make their way to Milton Keynes.
‘This is clearly a distressing situation’
The train crash near Bedford has been described as “clearly a distressing situation for many people across our community”.
Tom Wootton said in a post on Facebook: “I am deeply concerned by reports of the train collision near Bedford this evening.
“My thoughts are first and foremost with everyone involved, particularly those who have been injured, their families and loved ones. I would also like to thank the emergency services, NHS staff, railway personnel and all those responding to this incident for their swift and professional actions under very difficult circumstances.
“I am in contact with relevant agencies and receiving updates as the situation develops. Bedford Borough Council stands ready to provide whatever support may be required as emergency responders continue their work.
“This is clearly a distressing situation for many people across our community. At this stage, it is important that we allow the emergency services and railway authorities the space they need to deal with the incident and establish the full facts.
“Bedford is a strong community, and when difficult events occur, we come together to support one another. EMR confirrms which services have been involved in the crash
The two trains involved in the collision at Bedford South were the 4.40pm East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3.50pm Nottingham to London St Pancras service, the train operator said in a statement.

Witness describes moment of the crash
Pete Knapp, 40, said: “There was a moment of being flung into the chair in front, and then I saw smoke. People were crying, screaming, people were so scared and confused.
“I got up and I saw a lot of people who were unable to speak, had broken legs, and then I managed to get out of the train and because I’m quite thin I was able to squeeze out through the gap in the doors.”

Aslef general secretary ‘deeply concerned’
Dave Calfe, general secretary of Aslef, the train drivers’ union, said: “We are deeply concerned by reports of a collision between two trains near Bedford. At least one carriage shunted off
Aerial footage of the aftermath shows two damaged East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains with most carriages on the tracks but at least one shunted off.
Footage shows a long line of emergency vehicles on a rural road as emergency crews and passengers gathered in the neighbouring field.

According to Flighradar24, “a London’s Air Ambulance H135 has just left the scene of a crash between two passenger trains near Bedford”.

According to a witness, Dr Pete Knapp, the collision took place at 5.12pm. He said there was a “sudden crash”.
