How Long Are You Willing To Be On The “Come Up?”

You’re Next Up… But When Are You Up?

This started as a late-night car conversation with my friends at the end of 2025. We were doing what everyone does – breaking down the year, talking through the highs, lows, and what we wanted from 2026. Our end of year social group wrap party as it were.

A few hours in, I said: “All the time it’s ‘you’re next up’… but in 2026, I wanna be up.”

We laughed – but then we really sat on it.  Because the truth is, we’ve been progressing every single year. Real progress. Tangible growth. And still… somehow… we’re “next up.”  So that raises a question: Are we actually moving forward to a finished product – or are the goalpost’s constantly moving?

Take someone like J. Cole.  He dropped ‘The Come Up’ in 2007, hungry and trying to prove he could stand next to anyone. He even said himself;

I am just trying to prove I can really rap with anybody; I can hang with anybody. I was trying to keep up with the Lil Wayne’s and all that at that time.”

Two years later, he’s signed by Jay-Z. Then comes the run: The Warm Up / Friday Night Lights / Cole World / Born Sinner / 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

That last one? That’s the one people point to. The “arrival.” The moment he enters the “Big Three” conversation.  But here’s the thing, it’s subjective. Some would have thought he was already there years earlier and J Cole himself might have felt no different.

That’s where it gets interesting.  Because being “next up” can mean two completely different things.  On one side, it’s fuel.  It’s the reminder that you’re close—but not done. That people see something in you, even if you haven’t fully stepped into it yet. It keeps you sharp. Keeps you working. Keeps you hungry.

But on the other side…  “Up” doesn’t stay still.  First, you just want to get in the room. Then, you want to be invited back. Then, you want a seat at the table. Then, eventually – you want your own room.  And just like that, the target moves again.

So maybe the truth is this: You never actually feel like you’ve arrived.  Because the moment you get close, your definition of “up” evolves.

The “come up” doesn’t end. It just changes shape, the hustle never stops. At the end of the day, labels don’t really matter anyway.  “Next up.” “Up now.” “On the rise.”  All of it is noise if the work isn’t there. So let people call you whatever they want. Just make sure the work you do speaks louder.
