Forest’s decision to dismiss Pereira came as ‘complete surprise’

Vitor Pereira has confirmed he is no longer Nottingham Forest’s head coach, saying the decision to dismiss him came as a “complete surprise”.

Forest are now expected to name former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner as Pereira’s successor, with a deal close to being finalised.

Pereira, who was Forest’s fourth head coach of a chaotic 2025-26 season, took charge in February, replacing Sean Dyche.

During his 20 games in charge, of which he won eight (D6 L6), he led Forest to the Europa League semi-finals and kept them in the Premier League, finishing 16th.

Pereira’s current deal was due to run through to June 2027, and he was reportedly in talks to renew his contract. Though those negotiations stalled last month, both parties were expected to reopen them this season.

But now, the former Wolves boss, who had been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, has confirmed he will not be in the dugout at the City Ground for the upcoming campaign, much to his shock.

“Although this decision came as a complete surprise to me and without any warning, I fully respect the club’s right to make the decisions it believes are best for its future,” Pereira said in a statement to BBC Sport.

“Naturally, I am disappointed and saddened. I truly believed in what we were building together, and I leave with a sense of pride in everything we achieved over the past months.

“Together, we enjoyed a memorable end to the season. We secured the club’s Premier League status, reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, and created moments that will stay with me forever.

“Most importantly, I saw a group of players grow in confidence, belief and togetherness. Watching them develop, fight for one another and represent this club with passion has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

“I leave Nottingham Forest with no bitterness or resentment – only respect, gratitude and wonderful memories.

“Football is full of unexpected moments, and while this chapter has ended sooner than I expected, I will always look back on my time here with pride and affection.

“This is a special club, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow and achieve great things.”
