Former Super Eagles star Michael Emenalo has stepped down as the Saudi Pro League’s Director of Football after three years in the role, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Nigerian international has built a stellar reputation since transitioning into management after his playing days. During his time at Chelsea, he served as a chief scout, assistant first-team coach, and sporting director in his 10-year stint.

He worked under former owner Roman Abramovich, playing a key role in restructuring the club’s academy and charting the path for the first team. His efforts helped lead the Blues to success in major competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and several domestic trophies.

Following his departure from Chelsea, Emenalo joined AS Monaco as a sporting director, a position he held until 2019.

In July 2023, he moved to Saudi Arabia, becoming the Saudi Pro League’s first Director of Football. He joined at a time when the league was striving to gain global prominence, and since then, it has experienced massive growth in both player quality and the overall standard of football.

Soccer What Michael Emenalo Said After Saudi Exit

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Emenalo has left his post as the Saudi Arabia Pro League’s football chief, three years after his appointment.

Reflecting on his departure, thee former Super Eagles defender expressed pride in the work accomplished, noting that the solid foundation built during his time is his biggest legacy, and will serve as a catalyst for the league’s continued growth.

“When I joined the SPL’s transformation journey in 2023, what struck me most was the audacity of its ambition. We set out to do something few believed possible, on a timeline fewer still thought realistic,” Emenalo said, per The Athletic.

“During the period since, we have introduced and stewarded the standards and frameworks needed to pursue this audacious ambition seriously.

“This foundation is, to me, the achievement that matters most. There is, of course, still work to be done to develop the league and to grow football across Saudi Arabia; no undertaking of this scale is ever truly finished. But I believe I leave our league on a strong footing, well positioned for continued success.

“On a personal level, it has been a genuine pleasure to immerse myself in Saudi culture, to learn from it, and to experience the excitement of this adventure. I thank everyone who has supported and collaborated with me along the way—in particular, the staff of the Saudi League and the members of the football development department, whose excellence, resilience, and dedication were the driving force behind everything we achieved,” he added.

Emenalo’s career trajectory is a testament to his brilliance. While few former footballers successfully transition into prominent executive roles, Emenalo has achieved this with aplomb.

During his playing career, he earned 14 caps for Nigeria and was a member of the Super Eagles squad that competed at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
