The former Eagles TE talked about the impact of having a core group of guys to rely on in Philly.
It was an Eagles reunion on the latest episode of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, who spoke to Zach and Julie Ertz about the World Cup and Zach’s time in Philadelphia. They spent some time catching up, comparing football to soccer, and ribbing each other about their very blonde hair in 2021.
There were a few notables coming out of the interview, and it highlighted — perhaps moreso now than ever before — Zach’s affinity and appreciation for his nine years playing for the Eagles. In fact, the tight end got emotional reminiscing about playing alongside guys like Jason, Lane Johnson, Brandon Graham, and Fletcher Cox. He explained that it wasn’t always easy, but knowing they all had each others back made that core group of guys something Zach looks back on fondly.
”It is a little emotional talking about it — I don’t know why.
But just going through that, I would say, being around the guys. No one’s gonna remember about how many yards, or catches, or starts we had, but I do remember the day-to-day grinding, and the stories of you [Jason] kicking over trash cans because you didn’t like the way a coach was treating someone else, or Lane hiding your helmet. Those are the things I remember about the day-to-day. I don’t remember in Week 11 how many catches or yards, or if we won or not, but I do remember those sorts of things the most.”
Zach also admitted that the Eagles fight song is so catchy, that even last year as a visiting player with the Commanders, he found himself singing along in his head while on the opposing bench.
It wasn’t one of the more insightful or newsworthy interviews by former Eagles players this offseason, but it felt familiar, and genuine, and like catching up with an old friend. It also left little to no doubt that when Zach does decide to retire from the NFL, he’ll do so as an Eagle — as he should and deserves.
