Gwiji Isaiah reports that Kapkolei Girls High School was closed indefinitely and students sent home following a strike that reportedly erupted on Sunday night over concerns related to the school’s management and administration.

The unrest prompted intervention from education officials and security personnel, who moved in to restore calm and assess the situation.

In the video, the girls are dressed in full tracksuit uniforms normally used for games. and are seen running down the road while screaming.

What are some suggestions from Kenyans?

The strike comes only days after 17 students at Utumishi Girls Academy sadly lost their lives when their schoolmates burnt the dormitory, with many of them still asleep in their beds. It is, therefore, understandable why many parents were unhappy with the actions of the young girls.

“This one is a big no! Imagine these are Kapkolei Girls students, rioting and forcing their way out of school at night. What about their own safety? This is not the way; lives are precious, and such actions can easily lead to injuries, tragedy, or loss of life. No grievance is worth putting young lives at risk,”said former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

“No! Let us choose dialogue, discipline, and peaceful solutions,”he added.

Ray Formation said that consecutive governments have normalised school unrest and vandalism; no serious measures have been taken since the unfortunate tragedies in St Kizito, Bombolulu, Kyanguli and Nyeri High School.

“It is high time to pass stringent laws against delinquent students,” he said.

Investigations into the cause of the strike are ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further details as inquiries continue.

How did Kenyans react to the video?

Baba Kim Spct:

“Mafuta taa kwa chakula ya shule irudi kama kitambo…”

Evans Onaga:

“Spare the rod spoil the child.”

Angel Eric:

“Mtu kwao ni Nairobi and she is comfortably getting out of the school at midnight, anaenda wapi sasa surely? Later you blame teachers.”

Innoh Ekirapa:

“Shule zipewe break kidogo ata one week is enough.”

Fredric Mutuku Mbuu:

“This is not how I was brought up, this is not how I will raise my daughter. As much as there is freedom, there should be limits.”

Mokua Brian:

“As Matiang’i proposed boarding schools should be abolished and turned to day schools. That clever man new the disaster that’s coming.”

Franckosgei Sego:

“Day schools strike also most of the times.Your statement is as good as proposing all schools to be abolished because of strikes.”

Governor Ja Nyando:

“I need the gov’t to offer me, the Ministry of Education. I would help restore the Education dignity and discipline with perfection performance in schools.”

Ambira Boys High School strikes at night

In another story, Ambira Boys High School was also closed indefinitely after the boys went on a destructive night rampage and left major sections of their school vandalised.

Reportedly, the riots erupted only hours after claims emerged that Form Four candidates were warned about using “mwakenya” during KCSE exams.

Students reportedly destroyed offices as well as computers, files, internet cables and kitchen facilities before police moved in to restore order.
