I cut the cord years ago and I still watch local news for free — here’s how

I cut the cord years ago, and I still watch local news for free — here’s how

When I finally canceled my premium TV subscription, I had the same hesitation most people do: What about live television? It’s easy to replace most shows and movies with streaming services, but losing immediate access to local breaking news, regional weather alerts, and community updates feels like a real trade-off.

The truth is, paying a massive monthly bill just to see what is happening in your own backyard is unnecessary. Two years into life without a cable box, I actually watch more local news now, and I don’t pay anything for it.

If you’re thinking about cutting the cord but still want to stay plugged into local stations, here are the exact methods and tools I use to do so for free.

How to watch free local news with an OTA TV antenna

Why modern antennas are nothing like the old rabbit ears

When people think of TV antennas, they usually picture the clunky metallic rabbit ears from the 1980s that required constant, frustrating adjustments. Modern wireless antennas are completely different. They are thin, lightweight, and can easily be hidden behind a television or taped to a window.

An OTA antenna remains the single best cord-cutting investment you can make. It pulls uncompressed broadcast signals directly from the air, including those from major networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS.

Because the signal is uncompressed, picture quality is often crisper than that of standard cable providers. More importantly, it requires no internet connection. If a severe storm knocks out your fiber-optic line or Wi-Fi network, an antenna ensures that you still receive live emergency transmissions and weather updates.

If you want to take this setup a step further, look into a network tuner like a SiliconDust HDHomeRun or a Tablo box. You plug your antenna directly into one of these devices instead of your TV, and it broadcasts that over-the-air signal across your home Wi-Fi network. This lets you watch live local broadcasts on any smartphone, tablet, or streaming stick in your home via a dedicated app.

SiliconDust

The SiliconDust HDHomeRun Flex 4K is an external network TV tuner that connects to an over-the-air (OTA) antenna to stream free, live television to multiple devices across your home Wi-Fi network. It features four built-in tuners—two of which support the latest NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) 4K/1080p standards—allowing up to four separate devices like smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs to view content simultaneously. Additionally, the device can be converted into a whole-home DVR solution by simply connecting an external USB hard drive.

Free apps that stream local news without a cable subscription

NewsON: The easiest way to watch your local station live

NewsOn on Apple TV.

If an antenna isn’t an option because of your location or apartment rules, free streaming apps are the next best thing. While they won’t entirely replace a live TV package, such as the ever-expensive YouTube TV service, for die-hard sports fans, there are several excellent, completely free ad-supported apps dedicated solely to local journalism.

NewsON is easily the most straightforward tool for the job. It features live and on-demand local newscasts from more than 275 trusted stations across the United States. When you launch the app on a Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV, it uses your location to automatically pull up your local station. You can watch the morning or evening news live as it airs, or catch a replay of a broadcast from earlier in the day if you missed the live window.

If you prefer a more personalized experience, apps like Haystack News and Local Now function like personalized news networks. Instead of streaming a single station end-to-end, they let you select your preferred topics (such as regional politics, local sports, or specific weather zones). The apps then compile a continuous playlist of short, relevant segments from your local news affiliates along with national headlines.

NewsOn

NewsON is a free, ad-supported streaming service that gives viewers access to live and on-demand local TV newscasts from over 285 stations across more than 165 U.S. markets. The platform aggregates local news broadcasts, previous newscasts (up to 48 hours), and short story clips without requiring a cable subscription or user login. It is widely available on connected TV devices like Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Samsung Smart TVs, as well as iOS and Android mobile platforms.

How Pluto TV and Tubi expanded into local news coverage

Most cord-cutters are already familiar with Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) services like Pluto TV and Tubi, two of the best free streaming services overall, as well as The Roku Channel for watching old movies or classic TV reruns. However, many users overlook the “Live News” directory built directly into these platforms.

Over the last two years, major media groups (including Paramount, FOX, and NBCUniversal) have aggressively expanded their online presence. Instead of locking their local news broadcasts behind a paywall, they have launched 24/7 streaming news feeds for dozens of major metropolitan areas.

If you open Pluto TV or Tubi and go to the news section, you’ll find dedicated, rolling feeds for local affiliates in cities across the country. These channels broadcast live local news programs when they air and run looped repeats or breaking coverage updates in between.

Watch free local news directly from station apps and YouTube

Download your local station’s own app for live and on-demand news

WNEP TV on YouTube.

Sometimes the most efficient way to watch a specific local station is to skip the third-party aggregators entirely and go straight to the station’s digital front door.

Almost every local news agency in the country has developed its own standalone application for smart TVs and mobile platforms. If your favorite local broadcast is on a specific network, search for that exact station (like ‘WNEP’ or ‘KCRA 3 News’) in the app store of your device. These apps almost always include a “Watch Live” tab that replicates whatever is currently broadcast over the air.

Do not underestimate YouTube as a live local news source. A massive number of local stations now stream their daily scheduled morning, noon, and evening broadcasts live on their official YouTube channels. Plus, if you miss a live segment about a specific town council meeting or community event, individual clips are usually uploaded to the station’s YouTube page within minutes of the live broadcast.

Which free local news method is right for you?

You don’t need a complex setup to make this work. If you are trying to decide which route to take, use this quick breakdown:

  • Choose an antenna if you want the highest picture quality, zero reliance on a web connection, and easy access to major live network programming (like prime-time sports) alongside the news.
  • Choose aggregator apps (NewsON/Haystack) if you want a quick, zero-hardware solution to watch local morning or evening news on your schedule.
  • Choose FAST services (Pluto/Tubi) if you already use these platforms and want an easy way to check in on metropolitan news feeds without switching apps.

With these options, you can continue to enjoy local live news, stay connected to your community, and save money each month. Consider what matters most to you—quality, flexibility, or convenience—and you’ll find a free local news option that meets your needs.
