Julian Alvarez has confirmed he wants to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, saying he would like to fulfil his “dream”.
Alvarez’s future has been the subject of major speculation in recent months, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal both interested in his signature.
The Argentinian joined Atletico from Manchester City in August 2024 and has gone on to make 106 appearances in all competitions while netting 49 goals.
Since his debut on 19 August 2024, Alvarez has scored more goals (49), had more shots (238) and registered the joint-most assists (17) among Atletico players.
The 26-year-old directly contributed to 29 goals (20 goals, nine assists) in 49 games for Atleti in 2025-26 (not including the Club World Cup), the fifth-most among LaLiga players.
And Alvarez has now spoken out on his future, claiming he has already spoken to the club about his desire to leave the Metropolitano.
“I can’t hide, nor act as if I don’t want to be clear, I’m trying to be honest,” Alvarez told ESPN after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria in the World Cup, as quoted by Marca.
“I spoke with people at Atletico, and I think the best thing for everyone involved is for me to leave.
“I want to fulfil my dream.”
The dream Alvarez is alluding to is a move to Barcelona, according to reports, with the LaLiga champions also said to have agreed personal terms with the striker.
Real Madrid confirmed they had a €150m bid for Alvarez turned down by Atletico earlier this month, though the club are determined to keep hold of one of their key players.
Alvarez reportedly has a €500m release clause in his contract.
