Making Money From Office Furniture: A Growing Business Opportunity

In Nigeria’s fast-evolving business environment, the office furniture market is quietly emerging as a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs.

With new businesses springing up daily and existing organisations expanding their operations, demand for office furniture , from chairs and desks to filing cabinets and safes remains consistently strong.

For many dealers, the trade goes beyond mere product sales. It is driven by a steady flow of customers, including startups establishing co-working spaces, banks opening new branches, and government agencies furnishing offices.

This continuous demand has created a dependable income stream for those in the business.

In addition, the shift in work culture has significantly boosted market growth, as many professionals now work beyond traditional office spaces, driving demand for functional and well-equipped home office setups.

A Lagos-based professional, Toluwalase Johnson, said his decision to invest in office furniture was driven by the need for comfort and efficiency at home.

“I wanted to make my life easier, so I decided to invest in my comfort. I got an office chair and table to ease my work at home for just over N100,000,” he said.

“For me, it wasn’t just about furniture. It was about creating a space where work feels less stressful. I have turned my home into an office as well because my work does not end in the office.”

Similarly, Tajudeen Adebayo highlighted the growing appeal of ergonomic and adjustable furniture, noting that such products enhance productivity and comfort.

“I bought an electric adjustable office table,” he said.

The table and chair are comfortable and spacious for my work,” he said, adding that the availability of different sizes makes them suitable for various needs.

Furniture dealers say the market caters to a wide range of customers, offering products at different price points. Mr. Paul of Brightstar Global Furniture explained that affordability and variety are key drivers of sales.

“The cheapest office chair is about N40,000, which many people buy for staff or students. We also have higher-end chairs ranging from N100,000 to N300,000 and above,” he said.

According to him, the resilience of the business lies in the constant need for office spaces.

“Even when the economy feels tight, people still rent offices, open shops, and expand operations. That ensures we continue to get patronage,” he added.

Some traders focus on importing high-quality furniture to meet the demand for premium products. One dealer noted that items such as ergonomic gaming chairs and adjustable desks are increasingly popular among customers seeking modern and durable options.

“Our gaming chairs go for about N210,000, adjustable desks at N250,000, and standard gaming tables at N190,000,” he said, stressing that quality and design attract buyers.

Industry players also say the business is accessible to newcomers, even with limited capital.

“You don’t need massive capital to start,” the dealer advised. “Many of us began small and scaled up. Focus on high-demand items like adjustable desks and ergonomic chairs, and build gradually.”

He further recommended networking with established dealers in major markets such as Idumota and Alaba to gain access to suppliers and competitive pricing.

As Nigeria’s business landscape continues to expand and remote work gains ground, the office furniture market is expected to remain a viable and profitable venture for entrepreneurs willing to tap into its opportunities.
