Tinubu Supports Dangote’s $17 Billion Refinery Project in Kenya at Africa-France Summit

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, for the Africa–France “Africa Forward” Summit. This event, co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto, aims to address key issues such as the energy transition, green industrialisation, digital transformation, and global financing reforms.

The summit brings together leaders from across the world to discuss how to improve Africa’s economy and create strong partnerships with global powers. While the summit focuses on broader topics, Tinubu’s visit also has great significance for energy development in East Africa.

Tinubu Supports Dangote’s Refinery in Kenya

A key part of President Tinubu’s visit is his strong support for the Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote’s plan to build a large oil refinery in Kenya. This refinery, which will cost about $17 billion, will be located in Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya. This project is an important step in Dangote’s plan to expand his business beyond Nigeria.

The refinery is designed to process up to 650,000 barrels of crude oil each day. Initially, Dangote planned to build the refinery in Tanzania, but logistical challenges led him to relocate the project to Kenya. The deep-water port of Mombasa offers a better location for the refinery, allowing Dangote to serve a larger market across East Africa and reduce the region’s reliance on imported petroleum products.

President Tinubu’s backing of the project comes at a time when Nigeria has faced challenges with its energy supply and refining capacity. Supporting Dangote’s refinery in Kenya is part of Tinubu’s plan to help improve energy security and foster regional growth through energy production.

The Benefits for Kenya and East Africa

The Dangote refinery in Kenya will have a huge impact on the economy. It will create thousands of jobs, attract foreign investments, and reduce East Africa’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. This will help make energy more affordable and reliable for people and businesses in the region.

Kenya, with its growing economy and deep-water port, is a strategic location for such a large-scale refinery. The demand for refined petroleum products in Kenya and East Africa is growing, and this refinery will help meet those needs. The project will also play a big role in supporting Kenya’s goals for energy diversification and long-term industrial growth.

The Africa-France Summit: A Focus on Regional Development

The Africa-France Summit is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Africa and France. The summit focuses on addressing challenges like energy access, climate change, economic growth, and financial development across the continent.

While discussions at the summit cover these broader topics, President Tinubu’s support for Dangote’s refinery highlights the importance of energy infrastructure to Africa’s industrial future. Having more energy sources in Africa is crucial for the continent’s growth and will create new opportunities for businesses and communities.

Tinubu’s Vision for Africa’s Growth

President Tinubu has always advocated for stronger partnerships and investments that will help grow Africa’s economy. Supporting Dangote’s refinery project is part of his vision to unlock more industrial opportunities across the continent. By helping expand energy infrastructure, he hopes to improve living standards and boost economic activity in East Africa and beyond.

After attending the Africa-France Summit, President Tinubu will travel to Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in the Africa CEO Forum, where leaders will discuss private-sector investments and ways to improve regional economic integration. This forum is a chance for business leaders to explore solutions for Africa’s development and share ideas for creating a more connected economy.
