Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Heaps, Pulisic, and more

Soccer

Lindsey Heaps is bidding farewell to French club Lyon later this summer but first the American midfielder will aim to lead the club to a ninth Women’s Champions League crown.

Heaps and her Lyon teammates face off with Spanish giants Barcelona in the UWCL Final in Oslo on Saturday. The U.S. women’s national team veteran is set to join up with NWSL expansion side Denver Summit at season’s end, capping off a successful run in Europe.

Heaps has won 12 trophies during her time with Lyon and should be amongst the favorites to start on Saturday after back-to-back goalscoring performances. Lyon has already captured the Division 1 Feminine title as well as the Coupe De France trophy this season and winning the Champions League would be the final nail in the coffin to one of the best-ever seasons in European Women’s Football.

In England, Chris Richards and Crystal Palace host Arsenal while Antonee Robinson and Fulham face off with Newcastle United. Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough face off with Hull City in the EFL Championship promotion playoff final.

In Spain, Alex Freeman and Villarreal conclude La Liga play against Atletico Madrid.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie continue their push for Champions League spots next season as Serie A play comes to an end.

Elsewhere, Auston Trusty and Celtic seek to cap off a domestic double with a Scottish Cup Final triumph. Bryan Reynolds and Westerlo visit Royal Antwerp in their Belgian league finale while Marlon Fossey and Standard Liege host Sporting Charleroi. Kevin Paredes and Wolfsburg begin their two-legged Bundesliga relegation playoff against Paderborn. Julian Green and Greuther Furth do the same against RW Essen hoping to stay in the 2. Bundesliga.
