Eric Chelle: Super Eagles coach linked with surprise move to Algerian club

Soccer

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle faces an uncertain future with his contract set to expire in 2027, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Franco-Malian took over as head coach of Nigeria in January 2025, replacing Augustine Eguavoen. However, uncertainty has continued to surround his long-term future with the national team given the lack of clarity over a possible contract extension.

Chelle oversaw an immediate improvement in the Super Eagles’ performances after his appointment, although he was unable to guide Nigeria to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their defeat to DR Congo in the CAF playoff final.

Despite that disappointment, he led the team to a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria received praise for their attacking style and improved performances under his leadership.

According to reports, Algerian giants JS Kabylie have made Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle their leading candidate to become the club’s next manager following the departure of Josef Zinnbauer earlier in the year.

Zinnbauer took charge of the 14-time Algerian champions in January 2025 and guided them to a second-place finish in the league, securing qualification for the CAF Champions League. However, he was dismissed in March after a disappointing run of results.

Kabylie endured a difficult continental campaign, failing to win any of their six group-stage matches while scoring only once. They also struggled domestically despite expectations of challenging for the league title and have since appointed Rabah Bensafi as interim coach.

The Algerian club were initially interested in Tunisian coach Mouine Chaabani, but Chelle has now emerged as the leading candidate in recent days, with the club monitoring his contract situation with Nigeria. They have also been impressed by the transformation he brought to the Super Eagles and believe he could help restore JS Kabylie to the top of Algerian football.

The 48-year-old also has experience in the Algerian top-flight league, where he previously managed MC Oran before taking over the Super Eagles job. Reports indicate that talks between both parties are progressing well, with Kabylie hoping to finalize an agreement before the start of the next season, which is expected to begin in August.

This is not the first time Eric Chelle has been linked with a move away from Nigeria, as reports earlier this year also linked the 48-year-old with the managerial position at Olympique Marseille following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi.

However, Marseille eventually opted to appoint Senegalese coach and former Rennes manager Habib Beye instead.

The former Mali coach has also been linked with several international managerial roles in recent months, including possible job roles with the Tunisian and Moroccan national teams.

Soccer Super Eagles future

Eric Chelle is still expected to remain in charge of the Super Eagles for the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this year. However, uncertainty remains over his future beyond that period, with no official talks over a contract extension.

Reports also claimed that the 48-year-old requested around $130,000 for a possible extension, although the proposal was rejected by the Nigeria Football Federation.

After missing out on the Marseille job, Chelle could now consider the next available opportunity if the uncertainty around his Super Eagles future continues. JS Kabylie are willing to make a strong financial commitment, with talks already at an advanced stage to complete a deal and Chelle could eventually move to Algeria upon expiration of his current contract with the Super Eagles if an agreement is reached.

In the meantime, Nigeria are will take part in the upcoming Unity Cup tournament alongside Zimbabwe, India and Jamaica later this month before facing Poland and Portugal in high-profile international friendlies in June, with Chelle still expected to lead the team for those matches.
