AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Why Tanzania’s presence makes Group L a dangerous trap for Super Eagles

Soccer

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been handed a tricky draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Soccernet.ng reports that the draw, which took place in Egypt, featured 48 teams split into four pots.

Unsurprisingly, Nigeria’s high placement in the FIFA rankings secured them a spot among the top seeds in Pot 1. Following the draw ceremony, head coach Eric Chelle and his boys now know they must tackle Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau to secure a ticket to the tournament which will be hosted by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.

Although a look at the group suggests that it might be a straightforward campaign given the Super Eagles’ superior quality and pedigree on the continent, the reality on the ground might not be so simple.

On paper, Nigeria enters Group L as the heavy favorites. The Super Eagles are currently ranked 26th in the world, while their group opponents lag significantly behind: Madagascar sits at 104th, Tanzania at 113th, and Guinea-Bissau brings up the rear at 132nd.

Interestingly, Group L is one of three groups featuring a tournament co-host. The other hosts, Uganda and Kenya, were drawn into Group H and Group D respectively.

While AFCON hosts receive automatic qualification for the tournament, they still participate in the qualifying series. This situation is what makes Group L a potential landmine for Nigeria.

Usually, the top two teams from each group get to qualify. But according to CAF regulations, when a host nation is drawn in a qualifying group, that host and only one other team from the group will advance to the final tournament. It is also very important to note that this rule is applied regardless of where the host nation finishes in the group standings.

As a result, if Tanzania tops Group L, only the second-placed team qualifies. However, if Tanzania finishes second, third, or fourth, only the group winner earns a ticket to AFCON 2027 alongside them.

This reality effectively eliminates the safety net of qualifying as a runner-up. As such, the Super Eagles must approach every match with a must-win mentality and strictly aim to top the group.

Aside from the Super Eagles—who are head, shoulders, and even waists above the rest in terms of pedigree—Group L threatens to be a fiercely contested affair.

Because Tanzania’s spot is already secure, the margin for error for the remaining three teams is extremely slim. Every team will treat their matches against Nigeria as a cup final, knowing that taking points off the giants is the only way to squeeze through.

Historically, this high-pressure scenario might have worried Nigerian fans, given the team’s tendency to slip up in previous qualifying campaigns. However, the appointment of Eric Chelle has breathed new life into the squad, ensuring the Super Eagles remain firm favorites to progress.

Should the three-time African nations assert their dominance and finish first, the second position in the group effectively becomes useless.

Among the chasing pack, Madagascar stands out as the biggest threat. Playing an exciting brand of football under Romuald Rakotondrabe, the Barea turned heads in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers by finishing second in their group, ahead of Mali and just behind Ghana. They appear to have the discipline needed to give the Super Eagles a bloody nose.

Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania look destined to battle for the remaining spots. Given that Tanzania’s ticket is already booked, there is a strong possibility they might approach these fixtures with a degree of complacency. If that happens, Guinea-Bissau has the grit to nick third place, leaving the co-hosts at the bottom of the pile.

The 2027 AFCON Qualifiers will kick off in September this year and end in March 2027.
