Sevilla head coach Luis García Plaza has weighed in on the recent performances of Super Eagles forward Akor Adams, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Montpellier striker has been in impressive form in recent matches and has played a key role in Sevilla’s fight for survival, earning six points across their last two matches with his goals.

The Nigerian forward scored a stoppage-time winner in last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol and made the headlines once again in midweek after scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 comeback victory over Villarreal, helping his side overturn a two-goal deficit to secure all three points.

That goal also made him the first Nigerian since Ikechukwu Uche in the 2013-14 season to reach double figures in a single La Liga campaign, with Uche having scored 14 goals for Villarreal.

Adams has now scored 10 La Liga goals this season for Sevilla and remains the club’s top scorer. It is quite an impressive feat considering he missed several weeks while on international duty with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored twice as the Super Eagles won the bronze medal.

Sevilla will host Real Madrid at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium on Sunday in their penultimate league game of the season. A win would secure their top-flight status and guarantee they remain in La Liga for at least another season.

While the seven-time Europa League champions have boosted their survival chances with good results in their last two games, they are still only four points above the relegation zone which leaves little room for error.

Ahead of the clash, head coach Luis García singled out Adams for praise after his recent performances and also urged the entire team to maintain their momentum.

“The last games we have six goals and distributed, but it is clear that Akor, the time of Espanyol and the other day, was at a very good level and hopefully it continues like this and the ‘plug’ to Real Madrid”, Garcia said in quotes revealed by Estadio Deportivo.

“This is a joint work; in attack the team in Villarreal was very good, we played soccer very well and we generated, and when you do it everyone has to contribute.”

The former Alavés head coach also hinted at possible rotations due to the intense competition for places in the squad as they head into the final stretch of the campaign.

“I don’t think there’s any surprise in that we have Akor, Alexis, Neal (Maupay) and Isaac Romero, and we only have two positions for these four players. Something similar happens behind, in the center of the back, with Castrín, César (Azpilicueta) and Kike. We have to decide”, he concluded.

Adams will now be hoping to continue his goalscoring form in the crucial clash against Real Madrid, which could ultimately confirm their La Liga survival. Since joining the club, the Super Eagles forward longest scoring streak has been two games and he has not scored in three consecutive games.

Sevilla will then face Celta Vigo in their final game of the season on May 23 and a win from both games would be enough to survive relegation.
