NPFL 2026 title: Two eternal games await as Rivers United battle Rangers for league crown

Soccer

The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is heading towards one of the most dramatic finishes in recent history, Soccernet.ng reports.

Only one point separates leaders Rangers International and second-placed Rivers United before the final round of matches this weekend.

Rangers sit top of the table with 65 points after 37 matches, while Rivers United remain firmly in the hunt on 64 points. Both clubs won crucial fixtures on Matchday 37 to keep the title race alive heading into what promises to be a tense Sunday evening across Nigeria.

The task is simple but dangerous for Rangers. The Flying Antelopes travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, knowing that victory guarantees a record-equalling ninth NPFL title.

Rivers United, meanwhile, return to Port Harcourt to host Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. Finidi George’s side must win and then hope Rangers stumble away from home.

All Matchday 38 fixtures will kick off simultaneously at 4:00 pm to preserve the integrity of the competition, with supporters expected to follow score updates nervously from Lagos and Port Harcourt throughout the evening.

Soccer NPFL: Rangers carry history and pressure into Lagos

Rangers have spent most of the season looking like champions-elect, thanks largely to the division’s strongest defence and the experience of coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who is also the Super Eagles assistant coach.

The Enugu side have conceded only 25 goals all season and continue to rely on discipline, structure and efficiency in difficult away matches. Their latest assignment, however, may be their toughest yet.

Ikorodu City have turned the Mobolaji Johnson Arena into a fortress during another remarkable NPFL campaign. The Oga Boys are still chasing a possible CAF Confederation Cup ticket and remain unbeaten at home this season. That sets up a fascinating battle between Rangers’ experience and Ikorodu City’s fearless home form.

Much attention will also fall on Rangers striker Godwin Obaje, who leads the Golden Boot race with 14 goals. His physical presence and aerial ability could prove decisive against an Ikorodu defence that has frustrated many visiting sides this season.

Ikorodu City will look towards exciting forward Joseph Arumala, whose pace and direct running have made him one of the revelations of the campaign.

Soccer Rivers United wait for help from Lagos

While Rangers attempt to finish the job in Lagos, Rivers United know they cannot afford any mistake at home.

Super Eagles legend Finidi George has transformed the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium into one of the league’s toughest venues, with the Pride of Rivers unbeaten since a 2-1 loss against Bayelsa United on October 13.

Their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against Wikki Tourists on Matchday 37 kept the title race alive after Rangers also won their match. At one point in Bauchi, Rivers were trailing and staring at the possibility of handing Rangers the title early before producing a late escape.

That comeback has now set the stage for a final day loaded with pressure. Rivers are expected to attack early through forwards such as Wisdom Samuel and midfielder Chijioke Mbaoma, but Katsina United arrive with little pressure and the reputation of frustrating bigger teams away from home.

The Chanji Boys already held Rivers to a draw earlier in the season and will hope to spoil the party again.

Soccer Rivers United vs Rangers: More than a title race

The final day is not only about the championship. Shooting Stars are still battling for continental qualification places, while several clubs remain nervously close to the relegation zone.

Even the Golden Boot race remains unresolved. Obaje, Arumala and Victor Mbaoma are all still in contention heading into the last 90 minutes of the season.

Still, all eyes will be on Rivers United and Enugu Rangers.

Victory would seal a historic ninth league crown Rangers and strengthen their place among Nigeria’s greatest clubs.

However, a second NPFL title would further confirm Rivers United’s rise as a modern powerhouse since their formation in 2016.

By Sunday evening, one side will celebrate glory. The other may spend the off-season wondering where the title slipped away.
