Sabrina Carpenter has apologised for failing to recognise an Arabic Zaghrouta cheer from the Coachella audience.
The pop star played a scintillating set at the Californian desert festival, with Sabrina Carpenter packing a slew of hits into her hour-long performance.
With some daring outfits – including a near-nude boysuit – and a special guest turn from iconic actress Susan Sarandon, it was a Coachella set for the ages.
However at one point Sabrina Carpenter – who wore in-ears for most of the set – failed to recognise an Arabic Zaghrouta cheer from the crowd, and this slightly awkward response swiftly went viral.
With one viral tweet calling her “insensitive and Islamophobic” the American artist opted to publicly apologise, stating that she couldn’t see or hear the audience properly at that moment.
my apologies i didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. my reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. could have handled it better! now i know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out

The festival produced a number of high profile moments on its opening weekend – The Strokes brought the best of their back catalogue, PinkPantheress was sensational, while Mk.gee and Dijon united onstage. Justin Bieber bamboozled fans by peering at his laptop screen, while high winds meant Anyma could not fulfil his performance.
