India Shawn does not operate in halves.
The R&B storyteller and sonic risk-taker is intentional in every element of her artistry and has been since the beginning. Discussing her musical evolution, Shawn sat with VIBE to trace the lineage of her extensive catalog. Through this lens, every song is a vivid chapter in a thick novel of her lived experiences. “I feel like people need to dance more,” she explains with a grin. But before the party starts, let’s start at the beginning.
“It came to me one night in the shower. It just came through the water,” reflects the Los Angeles native on the moment that birthed “Be Myself,” the cornerstone of her debut album Origin and the first song she wrote for herself as an artist. Without an intense studio session or a strategic co-writer, she poured out lyrics in the middle of the night, scrambling for pen and paper before the spirit evaporated. That urgency produced something special, and for India, that song became a mantra she still carries. It still feels alive.
As her sound expanded, so did her orbit. She believes “Floating Away” from the Outer Limits EP (her collaborative project with James Fauntleroy) is one of five tracks that is the quintessential entry point for her fans. Then came the moment that felt like a tectonic shift: her song “I’m Alive” was featured on Solange’s Saint Heron compilation.
“Solange, we got to like… what are we doing?” she says, laughing at the memory of being amidst that collective of alternative R&B royalty.
Now, India Shawn is ready to shower the R&B landscape with something fresh. “Rain On Me” marks her first drop this year, serving as the lead single to her upcoming EP, Subject To Change. Released alongside a corresponding visualizer, the imagery offers a preview of the transformation the industry veteran has perfected behind the scenes.
Subject To Change is set to be released on May 1 via Vanta Music and is executive produced by the label’s cofounder, D’Mile. Take a look at the “Rain On Me” visualizer and Set A VIBE with India Shawn above.
