General Braimah’s Death Raises National Alarm – CSO

The killing of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah during a terrorist attack in Borno State has brought about a serious concern over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, with a civil society group describing the incident as a major warning sign for the country.

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education said the death of the senior military officer shows that Nigeria’s security system is becoming dangerously weak.

Senior Commander Killed in Borno Attack

The Defence Headquarters confirmed on Friday that Brigadier General Braimah, Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, was killed during an attack on a military formation in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

Three other personnel also lost their lives in the clash, including officers and soldiers.

The attack has drawn national attention because of the rank of the officer involved and the location of the assault.

“If a Brigadier Is Not Safe, What About Citizens?”

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, CHRICED Executive Director Ibrahim Zikirullahi said the incident goes beyond a normal battlefield loss.

According to him, the death of such a senior officer inside what should be a secure military command area raises serious questions about Nigeria’s defence readiness.

He said if a brigadier general can be ambushed and killed, ordinary Nigerians have every reason to worry about their own safety.

The group said the killing points to deeper problems inside the country’s security structure.

These include intelligence gaps, weak planning, poor fortification of strategic locations, and low morale among troops fighting on the front lines.

It also warned that insurgent groups appear to be growing bolder, now showing the ability to strike high-value military targets.

Public Confidence Under Pressure

Beyond the military impact, the group said such attacks damage public confidence and increase fear among citizens.

When both civilians and security officers appear vulnerable, trust in the system begins to weaken.

That concern has become more common in recent years as Nigerians continue to face insecurity in different parts of the country.

Call for Major Reforms

CHRICED said the death of General Braimah should be treated as a wake-up call, not just another headline.

The organisation called for urgent reforms in leadership, intelligence coordination, equipment readiness and national security strategy.

It also urged journalists to continue exposing corruption, security failures and abuse of power, while asking citizens to remain active in demanding accountability through peaceful and lawful means.
