‘Unforgettable’ – Super Eagles target confirms Crystal Palace return

Soccer

David Ozoh has confirmed he will return to Crystal Palace after bringing his eventful loan spell at Derby County to a close, describing his time with the Championship side as ‘unforgettable’, Soccernet.ng reports.

The young midfielder, who is also a target for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, spent two successive seasons on loan at Pride Park, where he grew into a fan favourite despite a difficult start.

Ozoh first arrived at Derby in July 2024 as a promising teenager seeking regular football. However, his debut campaign in the Championship was cut short in February 2025 after a thigh injury limited him to just 10 league games, although he still managed one goal.

Determined to prove himself, Ozoh returned for a second loan spell in July 2025, making it clear he had ‘unfinished business’ and wanted to shake off the ‘injury tag’ attached to his name.

That decision paid off. During the 2025-26 season, he became a key figure in Derby’s midfield, playing 33 league matches, scoring twice, and delivering several important performances, including match-winning contributions against teams like Norwich City.

Ozoh’s investment in advanced recovery methods such as oxygen chambers and red light therapy helped him stay fit and complete over 1,800 minutes in the latest campaign.

However, Derby County narrowly missed the playoffs after suffering a home defeat to Sheffield United on the final day of the Championship.

Ozoh has his eyes set on a return to Crystal Palace but reflecting on his time at Derby, the 20-year-old wrote:

“Two unforgettable years as a Ram. I’ve loved every single moment of it. I’m truly grateful for all the support and memories. This club will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Soccer Ozoh: Crystal Palace return brings fresh opportunity

Ozoh now heads back to Crystal Palace at a time of change and opportunity. The club’s midfield already includes established names like Adam Wharton, Cheick Doucouré, and Jefferson Lerma, meaning competition will be fierce.

However, potential transfer interest in Wharton, reportedly from top sides such as Liverpool, could open the door for Ozoh to stake a claim.

Ozoh’s versatility is a big advantage. Palace manager Oliver Glasner has previously praised the youngster’s ability to operate as a defensive midfielder, part of a double pivot, or even within a back three. With Glasner set to depart, a new manager will reassess the Eagles squad, giving returning loanees like Ozoh a clean slate.

Importantly, Ozoh is not entirely new to top-flight football. He has already shown glimpses of his ability in the Premier League, including a composed display in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City in 2023.

Ozoh’s contract situation makes this summer an interesting one. His current deal at Palace reportedly expires this June, meaning he could become a free agent in a few weeks. The Nigerian may chose to remain at Selhurst Park should Palace decide to integrate him into the first team. Otherwise, the club risks losing him amid strong interest from Derby County and other Championship clubs.

Off the pitch, Ozoh is also in the spotlight as he awaits FIFA clearance to switch international allegiance to Nigeria, a move that could see him represent the Super Eagles in the near future.

Seen as a possible long-term replacement for Wilfred Ndidi or Alex Iwobi, Ozoh could earn his first Super Eagles call-up ahead of the Unity Cup this month.
