Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Pepi, and more

Soccer

AS Monaco’s quest to return to the UEFA Champions League next season took a major boost on Saturday.

Folarin Balogun scored his 19th goal of the season in all competitions, helping kickstart a 2-1 comeback victory over Metz. The U.S. men’s national team forward has now scored four goals in his last five appearances and 12 goals in 2026, continuing to be a major player in Sebastian Pocagnoli’s squad.

After Metz grabbed a 1-0 lead right after halftime, Balogun responded with a confident finish in the 61st minute. Balogun received an upfield pass from Maghnes Akilouche before drilling a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net.

Monaco would complete the comeback in second-half stoppage time as Ansu Fati’s winner gave the visitors a crucial three points. Balogun played the full 90 minutes while Monaco jumped into sixth place and four points back of the final automatic spot for next season’s Champions League competition.

Up next for Balogun and Monaco is a home date with Lille on May 10.
