Amanda Bynes Reveals Inspiration Behind New Song “Girlfriend”

Bring in the dancing lobsters—because Amanda Bynes has new music.

The Amanda Show alum is releasing “Girlfriend,” her first song in four years, on Apple Music and Spotify April 10.

“My inspiration was a lot of EDM,” Amanda exclusively told E! News of her single, “as well as rap.”

Indeed, the 40-year-old is mixing genres with the track, which also taps Los Angeles-based rapper Fenix Flexin. As Amanda’s label Create Music Group—which has worked with Jason Derulo, Keri Hilson and Deadmau5—put it, the song “blends melodic rap with EDM-inspired production, creating a catchy, high-replay record with a smooth West Coast bounce.”

“Built around a strong hook and confident, flirt-heavy energy,” the label continued in a statement, “it’s designed for repeat listens and wide playlist appeal.”

Amanda first teased her return to music in February, when she announced that she and Fenix were working together on something she described as “straight fire.”

The She’s the Man actress initially got into the rap game in 2021, releasing a 58-second track “Diamonds” with then-fiancé Paul Michael.

“Diamonds, diamonds, diamonds on my neck, on my wrist,” she rapped at the time. “Diamonds, diamonds, diamonds on my fist, yeah, I whip.”

The duo dropped a longer version of the song, as well as another single titled “Fairfax,” in 2022.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda’s latest project marks an extension of her creative endeavors following her graduation from Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in 2019. Beyond music, she has dipped her toe into podcasting with Paul Sieminski by launching Amanda Bynes & Paul Sieminski: The Podcast in 2023.

Plus, she participated in an art show and clothing pop-up in December 2024, where she featured multiple pieces of her art. Meanwhile, she joined OnlyFans last April, but warned she “won’t be posting any sleazy content.”

Ahead of the release of Amanda’s new music, read on to look back at some of her biggest roles.
