Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Cardoso, Richards, and more

Soccer

Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid got back on track in La Liga play on Saturday and now aim to carry that confidence over to the UEFA Champions League.

Cardoso and Atletico Madrid host Premier League-leading Arsenal in the first leg of their semifinal showdown on Wednesday. The American midfielder most recently played the final 32 minutes of Atletico’s 2-1 league victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, a result that snapped a four-match winless run in league play.

Cardoso has been in and out of the starting lineup over recent weeks but should be in line for a start after coming off the bench on the weekend. The 24-year-old’s last UCL start came against Tottenham back in mid-March but a date with fellow North London side Arsenal will be a much tougher challenge for Diego Simeone’s side to deal with.

Elsewhere, Chris Richards and Crystal Palace take on Shakhtar Donetsk in Conference League semifinal action. Lindsey Heaps, Korbin Shrader, Lily Yohannes and Lyon visit Nantes in Premiere Ligue play. Emily Fox and Arsenal turn their attention back towards their WSL schedule.
