Remember Those Odd PC Icons on PS5? Sony Removed Them 1

Do you remember last November one industrious PlayStation fan fuelled speculation by uncovering unused icons in the PS5’s operating system?

The symbols prompted discussion about a potential PC launcher, as they alluded to things like ‘Cross-Buy’ and ‘PS5/PC’.

Of course, this story has developed since, because it’s been reported that Sony is pulling the plug on its PC ports. Games like Ghost of Yotei and Saros were apparently planned for storefronts like Steam, but have since been cancelled.

And now it’s emerged that those unused icons, mentioned above, have been quietly removed from the PS5’s operating system.

While it’s Zuby_Tech on X (or Twitter) who popularised this news today, it turns out the icons were quietly deleted all the way back in December, shortly after they were discovered. Presumably the platform holder saw all the headlines about them and decided to react.

Naturally, if Sony doesn’t intend to release many more PC ports – certainly to its single player franchises, anyway – then these icons probably don’t make sense anymore. We certainly won’t be getting a launcher at this point.

It’s worth noting that PlayStation also recently edited its website to remove references to PC associated with some of its studios.

The company’s yet to actually acknowledge its change in strategy, but it’s clear from all of its action that it’s moving in a different direction these days.
